Rise of the Triad Has Already Turned A Profit

Interceptor Entertainment‘s first game has officially turned a profit.

Rise of the Triad, the modern, Unreal Engine 3 take on the 1995 Apogee Software classic, is now in the black after roughly a week of availability. Dave Oshry, the game journalist-turned-Interceptor Entertainment Marketing Director, broke the news on Twitter minutes  ago (tweet is below).

While no official budget or sales figures have been released, rumor has it that Rise of the Triad cost under $500,000 to produce, marketing budget included. Using the half-a-million figure as a ceiling, it sounds like the DRM-free indie shooter has sold at least 30,000 copies.

After the above tweet, we reached out to Interceptor for comment.

“Interceptor set out to create a specific game for a specific audience on day one,” said Dave Oshry. “We knew that if we kept costs down and delivered what we promised through the right distribution channels for that audience, we’d be successful.  Steam, GOG and Green Man Gaming have been amazing partners for Interceptor and Apogee, and we can’t thank them enough for helping us to get ROTT out there so much so that we turned a profit in week one.”

So who does this bode well for? The retro shooter market, for one. The Rise of the Triad name is held in high regard with older PC gamers, so seeing other classic properties getting a facelift could become a new trend. Forthcoming remake/homage titles like Shadow Warrior should benefit, without a doubt. This also means that Interceptor Entertainment should be on track for its next project, whatever it may be, and the same goes for Apogee. Of course, Interceptor still has plenty of work to do on ROTT, including a mod tool kit release by month’s end, and the expansion pack some sort of free DLC.

Excellent game. I bought it the day after release and I am still not sick of it.
