Rock Band Blitz Announced, Silly

The hoary old cliche “you can’t go home again” exists for a reason: it’s not possible to backtrack, no matter how hard you try. The new old will always lack something the old old had, and even if it doesn’t, trying to rewind the clock just feels pathetic. At least it does if it’s the formerly gigantic colossus that is the Rock Band brand, struggling for relevance in an era in which casual gaming is dominated by stuff like Angry birds. Harmonix has announced the return of the Rock Band series, and though it sounds like a lot of fun, it’s also a shadow of its former self.

Rock Band Blitz is a download-only title for XBLA and PSN that will have 25 tracks available at launch, but will apparently work with all 3700+ tracks from the series’ existing list of licensed titles. The catch? Instead of a plastic instrument-shaped controller, you’ll use the standard Xbox or Playstation controller. Also, it’s mainly a single player experience. So, yeah, this is more like a mini game in a GTA installment, and definitely shouldn’t be called ‘band’ anything. I guess Rock Solo sounds weak.

This is obviously a very sharp digression from the increasingly expensive and poor-selling titles of recent Rock Band games. It’s too bad for all that. Those games are fun, the market just got oversaturated. The fun of the series is in the air guitar + Karaoke, not just in the songs, so I expect this won’t sell that well. But maybe it will! They’re premiering it at PAX East this weekend. Game Front will be on the scene, and we’ll be sure to let you know if it’s good.
