Rock* Claims They Want 1 Game With All Cities
File this under things that will likely never happen, even if it sounds impossibly cool. Speaking to Digital Trends, GTA series producer Leslie Benzies discussed the legacy of the series, and specifically Vice City on the occasion of that game’s new mobile version. The whole thing is worth a read, for example his discussion of why Rockstar eventually moved away from having recognizable actors in lead roles*, but of particular interest is what he said when asked whether they plan to return to Vice City at some point.
“There are a few references to the city in our current-gen GTAs,” he says, “so it is part of that HD universe, and it is certainly somewhere we would love to revisit. However Vice City, perhaps more than any other GTA game, was as much about the era as the setting. Miami in the 1980’s is so iconic it would feel strange to revisit the city in a different time period.” I’m not sure I fully agree with that – especially since Miami has in the last decade been the setting for 3 hit TV series (Dexter, Burn Notice and YEAAAAAH CSI Miami.) Surely a Vice City filled with serial killer investigators, ridiculously unscientific police procedures, and spies is fodder enough.
Still, we get the point; Vice City might not be the best GTA game – that honor still goes to San Andreas even with SA’s hilarious in hindsight graphics – but it was the game that officially sealed the series’ place in pop culture, remaining to this day, despite being outsold by both San Andreas and GTA IV, arguably the GTA game with the biggest pop culture impact. It’s wise to avoid trying to catch lightning in a bottle twice.
What’s more intriguing is what Benzies said next:
Of course at some point we would like to have one big world containing all our cities and let the player fly between them and revisit their favorite areas, and in that context reimagining Vice City would be very interesting.
Holy crap, I say. What an idea. They’ve already approached something similar to it with San Andreas, which featured 3 cities plus numerous small towns. Adding two more cities to a single game wouldn’t be a huge stretch. Of course, do I think they’ll do it? Probably not. That would be a lot of game, even for them. Then again, it would make an excellent next gen system game. Still, I think it’s just something cool they’d ‘like’ to do, but never will.
