Ron Gilbert to Team Up with Double Fine, Concept Art Revealed

When Tim Schafer and Ron Gilbert first met in the halls of what was then called Lucasfilm Games, the former was just a tester, trying valiantly to find ways to break Maniac Mansion, the game Gilbert was busy designing with co-designer Gary Winnick. Schafer and Gilbert would later collaborate more directly, making The Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island II: LeChuck’s Revenge and forever establishing themselves among the pantheon of legendary adventure game designers.

Their subsequent careers have continued in a similar, successful vein, marked by zany humor and inventive design. Schafer founded the independent studio Double Fine, producing classics like Psychonauts and colorful modern romps like Once Upon a Monster and Trenched!. Gilbert has also stayed busy, consulting at TellTale Games and creating DeathSpank, the best and only adventure game about a knight errant in a purple thong.

Today, however, Gilbert posted two screenshots to his Grumpy Gamer blog that heralded exciting news: he was teaming up with Double Fine to make a game! What’s more, it’s an old concept — one that “pre-dates Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island,” according to Gilbert. The two screenshots below don’t give us much to go on, but for fans of the pair’s hilarious mid-nineties work, the prospects are enticing!
