Rover Exploration Game Extrasolar Now Open to All
Lazy 8 Studios’ science-heavy browser title Extrasolar has left its closed beta period and is now open to all players.
The title, which blends elements of alternate reality games with a simple, browser-based photography mechanic, has players acting as the crowd-sourced “drivers” of robotic rover sent to the nearest extrasolar planet to Earth. There, players are tasked with exploring the planet’s surface by directing their rovers around and snapping pictures of objects and life forms.
There’s a lot more to the game than just looking at photos, however. Extrasolar slowly builds a more terrestrial story of intrigue through emails, videos and other communications. In parallel to that is the exploration of a planet that is very rooted in science, giving the entire experience a realistic feel akin to viewing photos from NASA’s Mars rover.
You can sign up to play Extrasolar right now at extrasolar.com. You should also check out our feautres on the game — one exploring how Extrasolar can be so engaging with so little of what traditionally defines “gameplay,” and another about the game’s cleverly delivered narrative.
