RUMOR: Bethesda Taking Over S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Series?

Rumors swirl about the future of S.T.A.L.K.E.R., a cult, post-apocalyptic shooter-RPG hybrid that currently comprises three games released by shuttered Ukranian studio G.S.C. Game World. G.S.C. were working on S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 until the bitter end; since then, the franchise has been in limbo, with the exception of this cool-looking Crysis mod.

Until today, that is. Via Rock, Paper, Shotgun comes the rumor, itself reported by Ukranian games blogger Sergey Galyonkin, that Bethesda has picked up the video game rights to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series. Contacted directly by RPS, the Maryland-based studio refused to comment.

Given Bethesda’s Fallout bona fides, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. seems a good fit — we’ll bring you more news on this situation when it becomes available.

No…

Just, no.

If Bethesda does this they will with almost 100% certainty make it multi-platform and what is one of the greatest PC series will be infected with the fatal consolitis disease.

That’s even ignoring how they will ultimately fail to capture the atmosphere and feel that GSC was able to put into the world of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
