RUMOR: EA CEO John Riccitiello to be Removed, Peter Moore to Step In

Yesterday, EA CEO John Riccitiello was all over the news thanks to comments from Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter. Pachter told an audience at the Develop Conference, “He’s worried about being fired and worried why his stock has hit such a low point.” Pachter ‘clarified’ his statements later, saying that he was “quoted ‘accurately’ but was kidding.”

Today, Game Front has been told by an anonymous source close to the matter that there may be substance to Riccitiello’s worries. According to this source, at some point soon after the July 30 earnings call, Riccitiello will be asked to step down as CEO, and industry veteran Peter Moore (currently EA’s Chief Operating Officer) will be promoted to that position.

Our source noted that this change is not set in stone. The change at the top still needs to be voted on, so the results of that vote could change the story dramatically. One thing our source would confirm is the general feeling of tension throughout EA’s studios in the wake of the company’s falling stock prices.

Riccitiello served as the President and Chief Operating Officer of EA from October 1997 through April 2004, when he left to co-found Elevation partners. He returned to EA in 2007, this time as CEO, a position he has held since. He’s been at the helm of the company through many changes, including the launch of the Origin platform and the recent decision to point the company in an all digital direction.

While we haven’t been able to confirm the accuracy of this report, we have reached out to EA for comment on this story, and we’ll update it with any response they might have. We’ll also keep an ear to the ground and let you know if any confirmations are forthcoming.

I predict what actually happens is that Moore is offered three choices: Either destroy Riccitiello, control him, or force everyone at EA to merge with him. It’s also possible that Moore was always intended to take over as CEO, but Riccitiello decided it would be better for the company’s bottom line if he were removed from consideration just prior to release (of the most recent investor report), and then made available later, as a Deficit Leveraged Ceo, or DLC.

Of course, there’s always the risk that they’ll remove the single-Commanding officer option entirely, and force Riccitiello and Moore into an unwanted Co-Op situation.

@ Ross Lincoln Funny but the the fact is that is probably going to be his only choices. Ahh poetic justice.

The best part though will be that to those not in the company, all of this will just appear to be exactly the same with minor differences, that may or may not be clarified some point down the road depending on what the reaction to it is.

This could actually prove pretty good for EA, Peter Moore is a good businessman and seems to genuinely support a lot of -good- video games. I still remember when he took over things for the Dreamcast at Sega. Hopefully if he DOES become CEO he’ll at least attempt to fix their crap.

I doubt Moore was removed, because everyone knows that Deficit Leveraged CEO would be available from DAY-ONE for a substantial extra stock offer.

Riccitiello is smart if he gets out before the battered, weathered down ship that is EA sinks for good. EA has been profiting WAAAAAY too much off people willing to pay to play their games for WAAAAY too long. The Old Republic flop pretty much lit the fuse of the long coming bomb planted by their greedy, lucrative marketing strategies over a decade ago. Games are no longer about stimulating and expanding the audience’s imagination but rather psychologically trapping those minds to repeat tedious tasks so the company has a long-term source of slaved revenue. EA is disgusting and should pay dues to all their loyal fans who stuck with them since its creation.

I’m willing to offer him the “screw you” ending as a free download, for the modest price of the controlling share of EA.
