Rumor: F.E.A.R. Dev Working on a Hobbit Game

Monolith, the developer behind F.E.A.R. and Gotham City Impostors, could be working on a game related to Peter Jackson’s upcoming film adaptation of The Hobbit, rumor has it.

The rumor began with Superannuation, an Internet supersleuth known for tracking down tidbits by delving into online resumes and other items that developers post online without realizing they can let info slip out. Here’s the tweet that started all this:

“As to what Monolith/Warner Bros. Games Seattle is up to now – pretty sure it is a little fantasy action RPG-lite called The Hobbit: Part One.”

As Eurogamer reports, Warner Bros. made a bunch of layoffs across its studios based in Seattle, Monolith among them. But Snowblind Studios, the developer behind Lord of the Rings: War in the North took the brunt of the layoffs after the game flopped. That suggests that the next LotR property Warner Bros. develops, which will be The Hobbit, will have to go to a different studio — namely, Monolith.

Monolith hasn’t been doing so hot lately, either, as Gotham City Impostors hasn’t been treated too well, and reviews of F.E.A.R. 3 seem to be pretty mixed. We’ll have more info as it becomes available.
