Rumor: Fallout 4 Set In Boston
In what is either an anonymous university employee taking a risk with their job, or a calculated bit of viral marketing from Besthesda, a Reddit user is claiming that the next incarnation of the Fallout series is set in the cradle of American Democracy. Rather that delay further, here is what the poster said in full:
The rumors are true, Fallout 4 will take place in Boston. In case you haven’t heard, Bethesda has recently been scoping out and researching Boston. They also have a strong connection to MIT. I may or may not be an MIT employee. But that’s really all I can say for fear of losing my job.
I am telling you it will take place in Boston. Whether you believe me or not, how do you feel about a Fallout Boston?
So is it true? A few points in favor of this being an officially sanctioned post: the Reddit user calls themselves ‘Fallout4boston”; further, a check of the Intertubes doesn’t reveal any particularly hot rumors from prior to this post to Reddit. The rumors are true sounds calculated to pop up in google searches. So yeah, I’m guessing this is step one in the Get People Excited process.
And you know what? It worked! Because a Boston-set Fallout would probably rule. Boston has surprisingly varied terrain and a gorgeous harbor. It’s also the birthplace of the American revolution, which makes it a great fit for a series long concerned with attempts to rebuild some semblance of normality hundreds of years after a devastating nuclear war. We’ve already seen a kind of Rome-influenced fascism in the west and an all-knowing computer pretending to be president in Washington DC. I’d love to see people trying to build a real democratic government based on the original revolutionary model, and setting a game in Boston is the perfect means of portraying that. MIT and Harvard would be ideal places around which survivors might gather, and I imagine heavy references to the city’s Irish heritage as well.
It would also make sense economically, as the American revolutionary period has recently become something of a pop culture darling. Assassin’s Creed 3 is set during the war and will include sections set in Boston, and more recently, the ongoing series Falling Skies involves former Boston residents who band together to fight Alien invaders, basing their military organization on the revolutionary militias of the 1770s. It would also be a nice, new setting for a series that has largely focused on the American West (including Texas), with detours in DC and the Chicago area.
Of course, this could be nothing, and Bethesda will instead take a page from Rockstar and return to previously visited territory instead of expanding on their universe. What do you think, readers?
