Rumor: PS4 Codenamed ‘Orbis’ and Plans to Wank on Used Games

According to Kotaku, Sony is calling its next generation PlayStation Orbis, and if you think that’s the kind of name a sinister sci-fi villain would have … just wait until you hear about its plans to fight used games.

To begin with, know that Orbis is rumored to be looking at a 2013 release date, with “select developers” having access to kits already. It’s supposed to be rocking an AMD x64 CPU and an AMD Southern Islands GPU, and will support resolutions up to 4096×2160. If the gossip is true, this new console will lack support for PlayStation 3 games, because Sony hates backwards compatibility.

Now, the fun stuff! Word is, Orbis will combat used games by ostensibly forcing an automatic online pass into everything. Games that are purchased in stores or downloaded from PSN are to be tied to a single user’s account. If you buy used, you’ll be restricted in terms of what you can access, and will likely be asked to pay a fee to unlock the full experience. Given the wording, it seems that you won’t even be able to rent or borrow a game from a friend. Not without paying the piper first.

While I am sure a system like this is very tempting for publishers who only care about short-term gains, I find the idea of a console this combative against used games to be a little far-fetched. I don’t know if Sony is willing to alienate GameStop so harshly, considering the retailer’s considerable influence. I also find it difficult to believe that even Sony would be so short-sighted as to kill rentals and expect families to spend extra money on playing the same game. It seems pretty damn extreme. Not impossible, but I’ll definitely wait until something more solid comes across before spitting nails. I certainly hope it’s not true, because this would be a significant kick in the balls to consumers.

All in all its ing … A. AMD Processor – B. AMD GPU would have been great for Nividia making some use Phsyx and other things – C. No backwards compatibility its bad enough they took it from PS3 would have thought Sony learnt their lesson now.

THIS IS WHY PC IS THE WINNER! I can still play PC games today back from the 90′s which I still do! Plus STEAM sell cheap games beats paying £50 for a 8th Gen console game or £40 if they’re keeping game prices the same.
