RUMOR: Sim City 5 Due 2013
For a few minutes, at least, video purporting to be pre-visualization footage from a still very much in development new Sim City game appeared online, and if true, suggests that we’ll be getting a new entry in the beloved series after a 6 year break. The video contained no real footage, mostly storyboard renders without any motion. The video put the release date in 2013, and also apparently did not contain the number 5 anywhere, indicating this may be yet another digression in the series rather than a “true” sequel to Sim City 4.
The last Sim City game, 2007′s Sim City Societies, was also a digression of sorts. Released to very mixed reviews, criticism centered around aspects that were dumbed down, and poor performance compared to previous entries in the series. (It sold poorly and received only one expansion.) A new Sim City game presents EA with an opportunity to make up for that relative failure, and possibly give those of us still smarting from the disappointment of Civilization V something new to waste all our time playing.
Alas, we’ll have to wait a while longer yet to find out if it’s the real deal. Soon after appearing online, the video was taken down after a copyright complaint from EA. This would seem to suggest that it’s legit, which means we might be able to expect an announcement of some kind this week when EA presents at GDC. GameFront’s Ben Richardson is on the scene and will be reporting any breaking news.
