Saints Row: Enter The Dominatrix Nixed, SR4 Expedited Instead

Well that was quick. In what might be either a canary in a coal mine moment or a sign of greatness to come, it was announced today that THQ has decided to cancel Enter The Dominatrix, the planned stand alone expansion of Saints Row: The Third. First announced on May 4th, Enter The Dominatrix was to be a proper expansion pack continuing directly from the events of Saints Row: The Third. The turn around time was rather brisk – it would have launched sometime this fall – but it signaled tremendous support from THQ for one of their few truly successful franchises in a year otherwise marred by significant setbacks.

But before we start sounding THQ’s death knell, there’s a silver lining: they’re folding the concept into an expedited Saint’s Row 4.

In a press statement, THQ President Jason Rubin said “When I looked at the Enter The Dominatrix expansion in production at Volition, I was blown away by the ideas and desire to expand the fiction of the franchise. I asked the team what it could achieve given more time, more resources, and a broader scope for the project. We all agreed we wanted to play that game. When it comes to Saints Row, it’s clear our fans want bigger, better, and even more over the top, and that’s why Enter The Dominatrix will now be incorporated into a vastly expanded, full-fledged sequel, scheduled for calendar 2013.”

So why the sudden change? Almost certainly it’s that after a brutal 2011, Rubin needs to make sure THQ’s slate of games have the highest potential for profit. Recall that his first action was to announce THQ’s plan to undergo what’s known as a reverse stock split, in which company shares are combined to increase their individual value. This action is intended to prevent THQ from being delisted on NASDAQ; the company must meet or exceed one dollar per share by July 23, 2012 to avoid that action. The decision to cancel Enter the Dominatrix and fold it into Saints Row 4 is almost certainly a direct result of these pressures.

Rubin implied as much in the press release: “We believe the potential for this sequel is far greater,” he said, “as a full-priced, full-length, high quality, connected experience.” Frankly, a proper Saints Row 4 coming out before 2014 makes me happy. So long as they bring back branching, any order missions, and the hoing activity.

I liked srtt a lot. I am underwhelmed by the DLC. Fun, but way, way too short, especially if your character is already high-level. If there’s a SR4, I’d hope to see a new city and generally gang-level fighting rather than alien invasions or whatever. Maybe a little more character and/or plot. Certainly, I’d like to import my SRTT characters.

I hope they stick to the basics in general and don’t go too crazy with the “over-the-top”.
