Saints Row: The Third Modding Tools are a “Grassroots Effort”

As we reported last week, modding tools for Saints Row: The Third are on the way, making it a whole lot easier for modders to play around with the game and make alterations to it as they see fit.

According to Volition, the release of the modding tools will be limited, at first, to a group of modders with a history of creating unofficial mods for the Saints Row series of games. The developers will work closely with these modders to polish these tools into something that the general public will be able to use.

“We are just at the beginning of things, and this is a grassroots effort within Volition,” said Volition’s Jeff Thompson in an interview with the Penny Arcade Report. “By that I mean, right now, it’s entirely fueled by people within Volition who want to do this. These are people like Mike Wilson and Mike Flavin who are working full-time helping finish the PC version of Saint’s Row 4 and working on our next-gen tech. Even with that load they and others are on IM talking with IdolNinja and Minimaul, getting tools modified to work for modders, developing an early modding [software development kit] for release, and answering questions on the forum.”

These tools are expected to serve as a testbed for tools the developers intend to develop and release for the upcoming Saints Row 4.
