Schafer: All Devs Want Is to Be Treated Reasonably

Double Fine boss Tim Schafer believes platform holders can easily win over developers simply by treating them reasonably.

Speaking with OXM at this year’s PAX East, Schafer explained how the PlayStation 4 shows promise, thanks to the steps being taken to make it a more welcoming platform for developers. He said:

“Yeah, I mean it’s not that hard to win over developers because all we want is to be treated with just a little bit of reason. Because often you just get told the most unreasonable, crazy things and you’re like ‘really? That’s how you’re going to treat us?’ Just doing things like letting us patch our games when we want to, put our games on sale and release our games in territories that they should be released in – just doing a few things like that can make a developer very enamored of you.”

While I am a hardcore PC gamer, I must admit that Sony is making some good decisions with the PS4. What do you think?

As someone who reluctantly bought a 360 (the PS3 was INSANELY overpriced) after their PS2, I will also be awaiting info with baited breath…

Though I appreciate the gesture Sony is showing to devs (and to the player base), I’m not sure given the current direction of the AAA gaming industry that they’ll be able to back them up.

Also, I’m getting a feeling of quod pro quo regarding Sony and developers: Sure, the PS4 will be easier to develop and publish for…but given Sony’s current financial woes, those same devs can and should probably expect the licensing fees to be hiked up
