SEGA’S PS3 Exclusive 'Valkyria Chronicles' Coming to North America
The game also known as Valkyrie of the Battlefield: Gallian Chronicles, is coming to North America. SEGA announced today that their RPG will go by the title Valkyria Chronicles and will be a PS3 exclusive. Combining RTS elements with traditional RPG styling, the game takes place in a3D environment built upon the new “CANVAS” engine developed internally by SEGA Game Studios Japan, to resemble a watercolor painting in motion. A new type of tactical battle concept has also been designed for Valkyria Chronicles. Known as “BLiTZ,” this battle concept gives players freedom to strategically move around the environment and attack enemies using real-time controls.
Valkyria Chronicles is set in a fictitious continent reminiscent of 1930s, Europe divided in two and ruled by the Empire and the Federation. The Empire has set its sights on invading a small neutral country called Gallia, which is situated in the middle of the two great empires. The game follows a hero named Welkin and his fellow soldiers of the Federation’s 7th Platoon that are fighting against the Empire, who is intent on unifying the continent under its power. The Federation discovers that the Empire possesses a secret weapon, known as the “Valkyria”- an ancient race with special powers thought to exist only in legends. With this new discovery, the fate of the Federation’s ability to win the war and a hope for a better future hangs in the balance.
Each character in the game has its own part to play and each has other roles as well, like sniper, infantry, and anti-tank specialist. After each character’s turn, an overhead map appears and you can zoom in to control each one on the battlefield. All actions will be in real time, however each character will have its own time limit and is controlled by the AP gauge which can recharge during the same turn. Players will also be in control of each character’s aim, which will allow you to take advantage of each situation in a different way kind of like you would in a FPS. You will also have to take into account your environment by sending characters to certain positions that will allow you to cover your enemy from every direction.
Valkyria Chronicles will be available this Fall and for more information, check back with us often as more details are sure to emerge. You can visit the official Japanese website where I got the majority of my information about the game from, but you will have to use Babel Fish to translate it if you plan on reading anything – unless of course you can read Japanese.
