Sessler’s Soapbox: I Wanna Rock!

In alarmingly weekly fashion, Adam Sessler is back with another edition of Sessler’s Soapbox. This time, he takes a look at the success of rhythm-based music games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero and the apparent hate of these games by certain segments of the audience. If you’ve ever stumbled across a message board thread regarding one of these games, you’ve undoubtedly seen the obligatory, “Why don’t you get a real guitar and play that instead?” message from user HeroHata89.

I’ve never really been able to put my finger on just why people seem to exert this hatred over these otherwise beloved series, but Sessler brings up a good point – people just don’t want to share gaming. And for the same reason that gamers hate on the Wii, they feel the need to bash anyone that helps promote something that doesn’t fit in their narrow-minded version if gaming.

He sums it up very nicely at the end, so regardless of what side of the argument you’re on, give this a watch.

Thanks, G4 TV

    Some gamers need to get a effin life. They need to play their games and leave others alone. I’ve had people talk smack because I play GH on medium most of the time. Oh well. It’s good casual fun.

    When are people going to realize that Sessler is a fucking retard and anything he says should be considered as such?

    Amen! Finally ideals that say that you don’t need to rock at real instruments. I have some musical skill (no talent :smile: ), but Guitar Hero and Rock Band are the closest I can get. I haven’t even played Rock Band, but I’m sure I would be better at it than real-life.

    I originally thought Guitar Hero was dumb. About as dumb as DDR (which I still think is dumb). That was, until I actually tried it (Guitar Hero that is).

    Then I was hooked. Guitar Hero ended up being far from the lame I originally made it out to be.

    Moral of the story is don’t knock it until you try it.

    @William

    I started out on medium (oh, back in the summer). At the time I thought “Man, this pretty challenging.” Then I tried (and failed) Hard and thought “Well, this is too hard.” Back then Expert would have seemed impossible or inhuman. Well, today I play on expert and I am always looking for the next challenge. With that said, I know very well how perspectives change over time. So if anyone is knocking you for playing medium they are either just joking with you or they don’t have a clue. I certainly have seen my fair share of experts making fun of other experts because they can’t beat Raining blood on the first attempt. I sometimes wonder if they are conscious of their lame-ness?

    There’s more than enough tards out there talking smack. Best thing you can do is “not feed the tards” by simply ignoring them. The internet and its anonymity have developed a superman syndrome in the populace. Everyone thinks they are “special”. They’re special alright…
