Sessler's Soapbox Asks, "Why So Many Games This November?"

Each week, Adam Sessler of G4 TV steps onto his soapbox, and delivers a rant targeting at something in the gaming industry. This week, he’s addressing the issue of game publishers piling so many games into the month of November this year.

He’s right, there are a TON of games slated for next month, including Rock Band, Mass Effect, and Assassin’s Creed, just to name a few. Sessler also makes an excellent point in this short video: Publishers should consider holding a finished game, and making sure its release date is strategically sound.

Sure, publishers want to recoup their money as soon as possible, but do you really think a shooter that launches for the XBox 360 at the same time as Halo 3 has a prayer? I don’t. Additionally, when there are a glut of good games on the market, they all, regardless of genre, are competing for limited consumer dollars. Care to guess who loses in a case like that? That’s right, the industry does.

I never understood why publishers don’t release games in the summer. I mean, I understand people tend to go out more often in the summer, but that’s really because there are no really good games to keep us in our houses.

Really who gives a what Sessler thinks anymore? Personally i quit caring when he started acting like a braindead moron on Xplay, after G4 bought out TechTV. The things large amounts of cash can get people to do amazes me sometimes.

For once he has a good point. The mirad of sequels and over-hyped games released during the holidays choke the potential goodies, preventing them from having their rightful share of the spotlight.

yea, X-Play kinda lost it’s touch after the station changed hands… i still find it amusing from time to time but sessler’s opinion doesnt really matter anymore.

He’s dead on. Drub-in of boringness during summer for me in the UK…so I’ve replaced him saying November with, what, January or something?

What’s the problem? Can’t you just buy them when you want later on?

The problem is: which game do you buy?
8 games? I certainly don’t have the money to buy all of them, so I’ve got to pick one or two. For those undereducated consumers those 8 games all look the same. To the hardcore gamer, there is more emphasis on getting all 8 as soon as possible. I don’t understand why the publishers aren’t acknowledging the same thing Sessler does. Why release at the same time 7 other games are releasing and share the demographic? They only have so much money..

I agree, I will be one or 2 of them games that come out and then just forget about the other games completely unless one of my friends talks about it. Also by the time I am looking at getting a new game there is a bunch of other games being released, its an endless cycle

It’s marketing, they release them in time for the after thanksgiving buy-a-thon that happens every year, just in time to maximize on the feeding frenzy of consumerisim.

It likes sharks with blood in the water.
