Shadow Realms is Not the New IP BioWare Edmonton is Working On

Electronic Arts and BioWare announced a new bit of intellectual property today at Gamescom 2014 in the form of Shadow Realms, but that’s not the only new IP BioWare has in the oven.

BioWare has mentioned a few times that BioWare Edmonton, the studio responsible for the Mass Effect games, has been developing a new IP in the post-Mass Effect 3 world. That game was being developed by Mass Effect Director Casey Hudson before he departed the studio this month, and so far it’s the only new IP we’ve heard of coming out of the studio.

Except Shadow Realms isn’t being developed by Edmonton — it’s the project of BioWare Austin, the studio behind Star Wars: The Old Republic. So is this the game Hudson was working on with the rest of the Mass Effect alumni?

Apparently not.

“It is not the IP that Casey was working on and was announced at E3. That game is still on development in Edmonton,” an EA spokesperson said in an email to GameFront. “This is a new game from Bioware Austin. The same studio that made Star Wars: The Old Republic.”

An interesting development, to be sure; so BioWare has another new IP in the works about which we know nothing. Given that Shadow Realms came out with some serious marketing fanfare in the form of several live-action trailers, and that the new Mass Effect is still drawing attention despite very little information about it, it might be a while before we get any hard details about Edmonton’s project.

With Hudson now departed from Edmonton as well, it’ll be interesting to see in what creative direction BioWare Edmonton’s next project takes us.

Who cares? BioWare is dead, even with Hudson off the team finally.

I do. Thanks for the info, GameFront. I, for one, am pretty amped up… and willing to give the games a try before declairing a company dead.
