Shameless Diablo 3 Ripoff “Devilian” Praised, Not Shunned

Normally, you’d expect the reaction to a blatant ripoff of a game to be met with unilateral scorn. Not so in the case of Devilian, a ripoff of Diablo 3 currently in beta.

Under development at Korean games company Ginno Games since 2009, Devilian is more than just a Diablo clone in the Action RPG sense. Visually, it can be mistaken for Diablo 3, with similar settings, battlefields, creatures, graphics, and art direction. That image above that looks strikingly similar to Azmodan? That’s from Devilian. In fact, the location in which you fight this boss is almost identical to the area in which you fight Azmodan in D3. Check it out:

Now, as expected, many people have reacted negatively to this ripoff. However, many others have not. Diablo 3 failed to meet expectations, and while it isn’t a terrible game, a significant portion of the community is applauding Devilian for seeming like a better game than D3, based solely on the videos we’ve seen.

Here’s the trailer:

In my heart Devilian win, for being such a “slap-in-your-face” aiming at Diablo 3…

But morally Devian lose, because that means that Copyrights can be blatantly ingnored… Sending the message that anyone can copy anything, which is not good…
And legally, I guess Activision is big enough to defend it’s copyrighted IP… And would probably win, because it’s so obvious a copy of Diablo 3…

I have severe issues with this.

Yes Diablo III was a disappointment. But in all seriousness just because DIII wasn’t what people were hoping for doesn’t mean it should be trodded all over. There was still a large amount of work and effort put into it. And actually it’s rather annoying to see that apparently people would have Enjoyed Diablo III had it not been called Diablo?

Doesn’t that reflect something inherently infantile? If this work was an active work of Parody that might have been different but it jsut looks and feels Like DIII

@ Patches

What copyrights? Did the call the game diablo? Did they call the game world Sanctuary? Do you fight Azmodan or Belial in devilian? Do they have Decard Cain somewhere at their own Tristram?

I’m sorry, but just because a game looks like some other game doesn’t mean that it violates copyright. CoD and Medal of Honor don’t violate each other’s copyrights, torchlight doesn’t violate WoW cartoonish art style and blizzard doesn’t violate any copyrights with their barbarian class even if there were so many barbarian classes in so many different games long before diablo.

And no, Activision will do nothing because there’s just no reason to do anything.
