Shocker: Indie Developers Also Hate The New XBLA Dashboard
Ugh. The new XBLA dashboard sucks. Really, really sucks. It foists even more useless ads on people. It’s ugly and much more difficult to navigate. It fixes a lot of things that weren’t broken. Being afraid of change is stupid of course, but change just for the sake of change is even more so – right, Gmail?
Well it turns out that it isn’t just customers who are hating the new XBLA look. If you’re an indie game developer, the new interface, in addition to just looking crummy, increases the amount of time it takes to find your game. How much time? 17 clicks, according to complaints being aired on the Microsoft Developers Forum. Here’s a sample:
“Everyone knows the top downloads list is where the good money was made, if you landed high enough you could have sales for a few weeks if not months. If people can’t get to this list easily then things don’t look good. Even if your game gets top rated it won’t help that much if it takes the user 16 plus button presses to find the indie game top rated list.” – Neil Jones, Monster Talk creator.
“This is just a giant F-U to all of us. There is simply no other way to put it. Put 2000 plus games in a single list and give less than a half dozen filtering options, not including genre? Good call. Whoever made that decision should be fired immediately.” – a Pouncing Kitten Games developer.
“Wait, we’re being moved away from the area with the Arcade Games and game demos again? If so, that was such a terrible idea last time that they moved us back.” – A deve named ‘Steve’.
“[W]ith the new dash you can’t even browse the indie games by genre, so even if they do go looking they’ll have a hard time…” – Someone from Stinky Badger Games.
And on and on. The point is, developers hate it as much as I do. Hopefully, Microsoft is listening. In the meantime, what do you think, O GameFront readers? Let us know in comments.
