Showdown on the UK Sales Charts – Assassin’s Creed Walks Away the Victor

altairWith FIFA 08 and missing the top spot by just 1000 sales and Call of Duty 4 slipping to number three on the UK all-formats chart for the week of December 31st; Assassin’s Creed finishes out the year with only a 7% drop in sales.

The Simpsons Game, which has also proved to be very popular with UK gamers, fell by 24% as it dropped to number four, while Need for Speed Pro Street maintained its number 5 position even with a 23% drop in sales. The only game to actually see an increase in sales for this period was FIFA 08 misses top spot by just 1000 sales – see the full list below.

  1. Assassin’s Creed
  2. FIFA 08
  3. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
  4. The Simpsons Game
  5. Need for Speed Pro Street
  6. Pro Evolution Soccer 2008
  7. WWE Smack Down vs Raw 2008
  8. More Brain Training
  9. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
  10. The Golden Compass

It surprises me that a WWE game would be so popular over seas – I thought it was strictly a Southern-American thing like NASCAR. Ya know, Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer with Pork Rinds and Camel Non-Filters as party treats while you watch both of these “sports” on split screen in your run-down trailer.

Of course I am joking. No hate mail please – I am southern through and through, I just personally do not like wrastlin’ and car racing.

Why is the Golden Compass up there? I feel sorry for the adults who not only had to go and see the rubbish film that they had to get the predictably (but perhaps not) likewise rubbish tie-in game.

Looks about right though for over here. To be honest, I’ve seen few people get Mass Effect or any of the games pre-Halo. Post Halo, (including said Halo) CoD4 I’ve seen doing well and Orange Box (was that before Halo or after?). Warcraft keeps on bloody selling. I’m pretty sure I’m now the only person in the group I like to call my friends who doesn’t have WoW. Odd that considering I’M the gaming nerd, I’m the only one who doesn’t have it.

And I’ll only get Assassin’s Creed if someone buys it for me. Or lends to me. It’s got as much appeal as Gears of War; I’ll play it because I feel obliged to, but I’d rather not pay for it, although I did for GoW and now regret it.

Quite interestingly Assasins Creed, Kane & Lynch, Pro Evo 2008, WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2008, Need for Speed: ProStreet, and Fifa ’08 have all sold more units on the PS3 in Europe than on the 360 even though there are over 1m more 360′s there.

The only multiplatform release from the last few months that has sold better on the 360 in Europe that I can see is COD4.

I guess the PS3 Europe sales musn’t be in UK, either that or GAME are lying to people…again. “Honestly, it’s the cheapest console around.” Not to mention the idiot that confused the PS3 with a Wii. I swear to God, they’re staffed by morons who know nothing of the field they work in.
