SimCity Honest Box Art

Server issues, error messages, and a distinct noncooperation by PR reps when requesting refunds — SimCity’s launch has been one of the biggest disasters since Diablo 3′s launch. We decided to create box art that accurately depicted this fiasco.

Nice. Although the launch issues are bad enough on their own, the real nail in the coffin of the game is the touted glassbox engine itself. Now that things have gotten stable enough for people to spend some time with the game, the programmer/engineer types over at Simtropolis have discovered that glassbox is epic fail…some very enlightening forum threads if you’ve got reading time.

Some of the highlights include that the ‘agents’ don’t have home ownership. They just enter whatever residence is closest to them at night. Also, the pathfinding AI is atrociously broken, it does shortest PHYSICAL route only without regard to density or network type. Plenty of youtube videos up already showing it. That’s why service vehicles are so phucked up.

Detailed real-life simulation my ass. Simcity 4′s engine is significantly more realistic, and that’s just f-ing sad.

Check this out, the glassbox engine has some quite weird conceptions of how we live our lives. If you follow a sim to work from his house, you will notice that when he finishes work he will go to the closest “empty” house (as in, there’s no other sim there currently since they’re out working/studying) and start living there instead. This means a low-wealth citizens can turn into a high-wealth citizen from one day to the next, if that high-wealth manor is the closest to the sim when he gets off work.

It’s detailed in this thread on the EA forums.

When we finally get access to the game, it’s all smoke and mirrors.
