Sins of a Solar Empire Devs Announce New Title: “Sins of a Dark Age”
Despite its cult status, Sins of a Solar Empire still hasn’t gotten the love it deserves. That’s why today’s announcement from developers Ironclad Games is so exciting. Having already epitomized the pleasures of space-based, 4X gameplay with …Solar Empire, the Vancouver-based studio has set its sights on another popular genre: multiplayer online battle arenas, or “MOBAs,” if you’re into that whole brevity thing.
With designs on the lucrative market share currently dominated by League of Legends, Ironclad has been hard at work on Sins of a Dark Age, a five-player “Hero and Commander” strategy game. This weird descriptor sums up the game’s unique core mechanic; in …Dark Age, each team will have four “hero” players who control traditional MOBA units, and another “commander” player who handles base-building and overall strategy.
While tinkering with a popular formula is always a risky move, Ironclad’s hopes that their innovation will enliven early stages of competitive rounds and provide welcome assistance for new players, who often fare badly in a the dog-eat-magical hydra world of MOBA gaming. Other new features include kill-cams, online replays, and the ability to add new players mid-round if someone drops out. Head over to the official site for beta sign-ups and additional information.
