Sins of a Solar Empire to Get a Series of Micro-Expansions

Alongside the news of the new Gamer’s Bill of Rights, Stardock has announced that a trio of smaller-scale expansion packs are in development for Sins of a Solar Empire. The first of these expansions, Entrenchment, will be released later this year for $9.95. Developer Ironclad Games is also at work at two further micro-expansions, one of which will add new diplomacy features, and the other, new technologies and ships.

Entrenchment will add “a Starbase defense platform for each race (extremely powerful and armored bases housing a variety of weapons and other upgrades capable of defending an entire planet), turret upgrades for each race to make them more powerful (not only stronger than the current versions, but also upgradable with long-range weapons), mine fields and a Subspace Inhibitor platform that will slow enemy ships within its range.” I’m all about huge, Death Star-like battlestations, so I’m sold on the addition of the Starbase alone.

Stardock CEO Brad Wardell explained the reasoning behind doing micro-expansions as a way to provide players with more choice than the traditional expansion pack presents. “We’re excited about being able to deliver expansion packs in a more modular way than traditionally. Now players can pick and choose what features they want rather than paying a higher price for a larger expansion pack which may have features they aren’t interested in,” said Wardell.

It’ll be hard to complain with that logic, since the $10 price point isn’t asking too much if this is simply one third of an expansion pack. Plus, fans can get new content more quickly this way rather than waiting for an entire expansion to be completed. Stay tuned to 1UP for more details on Entrenchment.

yep i was reading the forums and they say if u don’t want to buy the 3 micro ones separate one of there guys on the forums say they going to bundle it for relate. i have to wait a while but that okay.

I’m just wondering how this will be handled in multiplayer.

Stardock says how they will handle MP on their website

“The expansions are being developed to prevent fracturing of the multiplayer community. If both players have a given expansion pack installed, the features are available, but if one does not, the expansion pack features are disabled for that particular game.”

So basically, getting the expansion packs is somewhat pointless, as not everyone will have them, meaning that in larger games the expansions you paid for will be unavailable?

Sounds lame.

They should of done it like CoH does it, and make it that if you don’t have the expansion, you can’t use that specific stuff.

@Drone: Yeah, but isn’t that also unbalancing? I mean some of the units are built to counter strategies employed by similar units and if you lack the ability to counter you run into an overrun situation pretty quickly.
