Skyrim Dragonborn – Ebony Warrior Quest Guide

If you’ve run out of enemies to fight and adventures to finish in Skyrim, that probably means you’ve hit the game’s high level-cap of 81. The developers behind Skyrim’s Dragonborn expansion have a surprise for unwary powerful players — the game’s deadliest character wants to duel.

The Ebony Warrior has resistances to every element, fast regeneration, a vampiric sword… you can’t even drown him. He’ll come looking for you when you reach level 81, so be prepared to fight with a few of our tips and tricks.

There are many ways to play Skyrim; if you’ve defeated the Ebony Warrior, let us know! Don’t forget to share how you managed this titanic feat.

Even at the highest level, there are still corners of Solstheim Island to explore. Take a trip through Dragonborn with Game Front’s Dragonborn cheats, with guides for Black Book locations, werewolf upgrade rings, and Dragonborn beginner’s guides. If you ever need help working through the lengthy main story, find information on every quest on our Dragonborn walkthrough.

Ebony Warrior Quest Guide

  • To unlock this quest, you must reach the level cap of 81.
  • When you do, an NPC called the Ebony Warrior will approach you. Speaking with him will begin the quest and lead to the offer of a duel.
  • The Ebony Warrior believes he’s done everything he can do… except fight an opponent as tough as you.
  • The warrior will wait for you at a location called Last Vigil. Beware, the Ebony Warrior is incredibly hard.
  • To continue the quest, you’ll need to attack him where he stands. Look below at his gear to get an idea of his capabilities before rushing into a fight.

Defeating the Ebony Warrior – Tips & Tricks

  • To defeat him, you’ll need to maximize your gear and stats. Check out Game Front’s Best Weapons and Best Armor guides to see a selection of special gear to even the odds in this fight.
  • If you’re lucky, a Dragon might show up in the battle against the Ebony Warrior. Try taming dragons and bringing them into this fight for an easy win. Learn how to ride a dragon here.
  • The new shout called Dragon Aspect will be incredibly useful, as it increases the power of your attacks and your other shouts for a duration of time. To unlock, check out our Dragon Aspect Guide for all three word of power locations.
  • Some players have reported that the Ebony Warrior might be tough, but he’s vulnerable to FALLING DAMAGE. Due to a bizarre glitch, it is possible to kill the Ebony Warrior by retreating to uneven ground and forcing him to fall. Even a short drop can kill him, in some players’ games.
  • When the Ebony Warrior is defeated, check him out for some amazing gear.

Pretty cool idea to offer up a special challenge for those that hit the level cap.

On December 4, 2012 at 9:16 pm

I killed it my first try. It isn’t really that hard. I used full legendary dragom scale enchanted with archery enchantments and 2 plus 50 health enchants. I used an un-charged legendary Auriel’s bow with dragon arrows. It took me about 3 minutes and 2 ultimate health potions.

On December 4, 2012 at 10:27 pm

I beat him using the Shield Rush perk.

On December 5, 2012 at 1:09 am

I beat him in 4 easy steps:
1. Bend Will a Legendary dragon to help with the fight.
2. Staff of Miraak and wall of flames for constant damage with minimal movement.
3. Dragon Aspect, one of my favorite things about this DLC.
4. Finally I have a weapon that I had the skill tree maxed on and my armor enchantments helping so a dragonbone bow(legendary) 160% damage.

P.S. Watch out for his Fus Ro Da if you decide to ride the dragon, he can knock you off of it for serious damage.

On December 5, 2012 at 1:31 am

Do NOT sheathe your weapon during battle. Found that out after 13 ultimate potions and his health less than a third to go… then BLAM! Had to do it all over again

On December 5, 2012 at 1:43 am

I am level 81, I’ve installed the Dragonborn dlc and I’ve visited Breezehome (my house) but I’ve not encountered this “Ebony Warrior”.

On December 5, 2012 at 1:46 am

I got destroyed the first time, so took a load of health and stamina potions to make my regen and max health increase, and hit him with Marked for Death full blast as I approached him. Then I hit him with my enchanted Daedric War Axe a lot. When the death cut scene happened, I still wasn’t 100% sure which of us was dead! Luckily he was. The guy is nuts, but after wiping out most enemies without issue, it was a welcome – if surprising challenge (especially as I hadn’t played Skyrim in a few weeks)

On December 5, 2012 at 2:28 am

Easy as balls on Novice. Don’t even want to think about fighting him on master. I just hacked away with my axe. Mostly power attacks. Having unlimited restoration for casting grand healing helped.

On December 5, 2012 at 5:17 am

Beat him with a combo of Unrelenting Force, Lightning Storm and backing away from his sword. Took 5 attempts though.

The best way to killed ebony warrior is to have a strong bow damage. Once you get in front of the ebony warrior go to your left climb the mountain to a point where he cant follow and shoot him with arrows we will try to heal himself but keep shooting until he is dead it took me about 8 mins

On December 5, 2012 at 4:38 pm

Pretty easy for me, I just used my Legendary Enhanced Dwarven Crossbow. After 5 shots or so he went down.

I can’t find this milk drinker, where’s he hiding? Where can i wait for this so called ” warrior”?

On December 5, 2012 at 11:25 pm

Honestly wasn’t the toughest I’ve faced. Used a Dragonbone Bow upgraded with the Alchemy-Enchanting loop and frost and lightning enchantments to the max. A sneak attack and two additional arrows and he was down. Used Ebony arrows as well. Also, I’m only level 80, and he approached me. So…

On December 6, 2012 at 5:58 pm

i thought he was easy, ive got a basic no frills character, dwarven armour, dwarven sword (one handed with shield), used 2 healing potions, just hit him a load of times with the sword and blocked a bit, no clever tactics or anything, yeah hes got a lot of health and uses shouts and healing spells but if you just keep shield hitting him and attacking with the sword he kicks the bucket.
they shouldve made more bosses like this and set them as regular enemies, the ebony warrior in oblivion was easy too, in the morrowind expansion ‘mournhold’ there was an ebony warrior called eanor or something who was basically a walking tank, he was tough. very tough.

On December 7, 2012 at 1:22 pm

Really easy to kill him when using vampire lord. I just used the gargle to distract him.

On December 7, 2012 at 10:43 pm

Not unique items. I bought that ebony armor of regeneration from the smith in shor’s stone. General Tullius gave me a DAEDRIC sword of the vampire when Ulfric was defeated. The rest can be found here and there.

On December 7, 2012 at 10:57 pm

I defeated the Ebony Warrior as well. 3 ultimate mana potions, with grand heal and fireball. I found out later that he had a fireproof shield, which made the job a tad bit higher, haha.

On December 8, 2012 at 1:29 am

Yeah, really liked the concept and the idea behind this quest, and even really enjoyed the battle in this quest. But c’mon Bethesda, just decently enchanted Ebony items?!? That is a cheap reward for beating the “toughest” enemy in the game. At the very least give me something unique that I can’t get anywhere else. Instead, we get an armor set that, if you have full enchanting, you can make armor WAY better than what you get off of him. So, while it was a great idea, there was a lot left to be desired, like, say, a decent reward for a character at the max level. If you are at the max level anyways, something unique for a reward would’ve been nice . . .

On December 8, 2012 at 10:33 am

I beat him on master after about 3 tries learning that my swords did too much damage and the deflect killed me.

I used about 50 arrows.

On December 9, 2012 at 3:49 am

Defeated him without taking damage. If you climb the mountain to the left of him and go around the winding pathway, you’ll eventually come to a point where you see an outcropping with no access. You can get there by walking along the steep wall. Now crouch and shot him with a bow, he wont be able to get to you if he can even find you.

On December 9, 2012 at 5:19 pm

So, I’m just hanging out in Riften, chopping some wood to make arrows for my epic Dragon Bone bow. I’m Lolth, the level 81 rogue/assassin. Like every other player at 81, I don’t fear a damn thing. When this “Ebony Warrior” walks up and challanges me, I chuckle. Yeah, ok. I’ll fight you.

I meet him at his vigil, and let my ego get the better of me. I walk right up to him and wack him with my dagger, face to face. I expect him to fall like everyone else who steps to the plate. Alas, he does not.

This is where the pain starts.

Needless to say, he lays the smack down on my Dark Elf ass. I begin to back up rapidly, as his sword whirls about my face. He shouts at me, much to my surprise, and flings me across the snowy cliff. I try to get up and I’m quickly peppered with a barage of arrows. I notice something that hasn’t even been a concern in months: I’m almost dead. I grab some quick potions, and decide to redouble my efforts. I see how it is, Mr. Warrior, you’re not playing around.
I switch to my Dragonbone Bow. I begin hurling my arrows at him while quickly retreating, all while he persists to pepper my with gouts of ice and snow. As I back up, I suddenly begin to tumble down the side of a cliff. I silently acknowledge my impending doom. Damn you, ego. Damn you.

I land with a thud, but I am not dead. I am so near death, though, I know I have very little time to act. I crouch quickly, Tricking the Ebony Warrior, and fire a lone arrow at him from my crouched position, suprising him and finally killing him.

I slowly push myself away from the desk, stand up and set my controller down.

“What the was that?”

It was awesome, that’s what it was.

On December 11, 2012 at 9:22 pm

i beat him multiple time. just reloaded too see the ways.

You can call a dragon for massive damage, or if your maxed out on your bow, let those arrows fly.
Pretty easy. i still prefere my daedric armor over his stuff.

Also….i killed him by shooting an arrow in his knee!!!! no joke either!!! try it.

On December 13, 2012 at 8:27 am

Just sneak behind him and his throat. I one-hit-killed him.

On December 23, 2012 at 5:25 pm

u can kill him by hittin him getin him near a high ledge use the full power of unrilenting force and as he flys in the air and hits the ground make sure to hit him with an arrow or eny thing that can travil a distane if u dont he will get up with no damege

On December 30, 2012 at 9:50 am

I killed him in about 30 seconds. He did have a shout which knocked me on my butt and the only reason I didn’t die was I had the Assassin accompaniment with me. After I got up I refilled my health once and then killed him. I started the fight with the Cyclone shout. I wish I had saved it before hand and had upped the difficulty level. ;-) He did almost kill me which was a pleasant surprise lol

On January 4, 2013 at 4:32 pm

I killed him in one hit, all i did was increase my sneak and one handed skills then i went up behind him and did a sneak power attack and it killed him in one blow.

On January 4, 2013 at 5:54 pm

It took me awhile to beat him but I finally did. I didn’t realize he would be this tough. He approached me in Whiterun almost Immediately after I had forged my first set of dragon armor, so I figured I would go whoop him real quick to test out my newly acquired Dragon Gear/Weapons. It took me the better part of a few hours to get it right. I tried hiding up on the rocks, and his shout could still get me…so I tried hiding even further, and he used his bow, which paralyzed me and I fell down the mountain, before I could stand he shouted me off the mountain. So heres what I did…

Positioned myself directly behind him, in sneak, and did a heavy attack. Immediately following the attack I used unrelenting force, which sent him barreling down the mountain, with just enough health to “yield” to me, before I delivered two more attacks and killed him.

Note, beware that If you send him over the mountain, and he doesn’t die from the damage, he will probably roll until he is out of range from you, in which case his health will reset completely. This happened to me several times before I was lucky enough to get it right.

Gear I used: full dragon armor (legendary) dragon mace (legendary) no enchants on any of them. my ring and necklace were enchanted for bow damage, which proved to be completely useless.

I also got him LEGITIMATELY down to about 15% health by using Marked for death and unrelenting force, and about 15-20 Potion of Ultimate Healing. My companion (Mjoll the Lioness) was nowhere to be found until after I looted his dead body, when she came running up the mountain.

Also when I looted him, his armor didn’t show up in my inventory, but when I fast traveled back home it was there.

On January 5, 2013 at 12:49 am

On January 5, 2013 at 3:20 pm

I killed him within 2min… I had a daedric sword that does 324 base damage and burns target for 34 points and absorbs 21 points of health. My armor was all daedric. Armor 350, boots 156, gauntlets 156 with one handed does 40% more damage, gold ring one handed does 45% more damage, and a necklace that gives one handed 44% extra damage. he only got me down to half health. he could have been a lot harder

On January 8, 2013 at 7:21 pm

I just beat him. I had a major issue fighting him, he was just too strong and kept healing. I finally was able to Fus Ro Dah him off the mountain, but he took no fall damage. (>:T You liars.) He stopped attacking and just stood there, so I snuck up behind him, stabbed him, took out Miraak’s Staff and sprayed it everywhere so he couldn’t move. I took out flames and just kept spraying it on him. He died easily after that :)

On January 15, 2013 at 10:20 am

I used Dragon Aspect, Miraak’s Sword, Lots of Health Potions, and a followes to defeat him and man was it incredibly hard but i did do it. Ohh I also used my shouts.

Fortify destruction to 100% plus mass ice storm. Too easy ^^

On February 7, 2013 at 10:05 am

Use Mehrunes razor, it took me about 4 strikes to kill him

On February 11, 2013 at 8:11 pm

That is one cheesy MOB. I tried the dual wield backstab quick kill and I died from the attempt. Guess he can’t be 1 hit or something.

So I pulled out my 900 damage Glass Sword and cut him down. Took less than 1 minute, he knockback shouted me once and I had to heal once.

Too bad no drops in the game compare to dual enchanted home-made equipment.

On February 13, 2013 at 3:26 pm

it was easy stand behind him so that your facing the cliff use the master level fire spell i cant remember it at the moment and then immediately use fus ro da on him launching towards the cliff sprint past him and climb down the side of the cliff he will follow you and fall and damage himself then as he is sliding towards you use fus ro da on him again launching him back up so that the fall hurts him again and when he reaches the bottom he is just a corps. quick and simple took me about 2-5 min to beat him.

I defeated him. I summoned Daedras and kept using my dragonebone sword, and daedric shield. I used Dragon Aspect shout and Fire Breath. I also tried unrelenting force, but it didn’t do much damage.

On October 23, 2013 at 1:58 am

I had actuallty been putting this off because it would be the last act of the game. I’d been planning on crafting a new set of double enchanted daedric just for the fight. Got drunk tonight and then got bored, took him on with the alteration armor I’d enchanted as a perk farm. Now shouts, no magic, just me and my axe. He knocked me on my keester but after 5 hits he was dead and I was down maybe 10%

Balls Alteration Necklace, 29% less to cast alt, Magica +74
Balls Alteration Ring, 29% less to cast alt, Magica regen +74%
Carved Nordic Armor Legen, 855, 29% less to cast alt, Magika regen +74%
Carved Nordi Gauntlets Legen, 393, +74 point magika, 2 handed +48% dam
Carved Nordic Helm, Legen, 419, 29% less to cast alt, Magica +74
Carved Nordic Boots Legen, 393, +55% fire resist, +55% frost resist
End Game: Legen Daedric Battle Axe, dam 400, absorb 23 point of health, 29 points of stamina

Me Heavy armor and 2 handed maxed with all perks (most other skills too but they didn’t come into this fight).

On January 25, 2014 at 6:53 am

i defeated the guy easily, i used legendary dragonbone armor with dual enchantments, i used a dual axe fighting style, both of em having absorb health enchantment, at start i summoned durnehvir, used dragon aspect, and kept on attacking him head on, when hed pin me down, id just use unrelenting force shout to push him away to heal myself.

On March 5, 2014 at 12:55 am

The Ebony Warrior Was Easy For Me I Used The Restoration Alchemy Glitch AndMade My Weapons Deal 34000+ Damage Each And An Armor Rating Of Over 500000+ So It Was A Breeze

On March 9, 2014 at 8:44 am

Defeated easily, enchanted Dragon Scale (armor rating 1,256) and two Dragon war axes (enchanted and improved) Unrelenting force and power attack about 3 times and that was about it.
