Easy Free Horse

  • NOTE: The horse may not stay with you after riding it. Some people have reported that the horse remains loyal and will follow you around, but others have problems immediately after dismounting.
    1. Go to Katla’s Farm, south of Solitude. NPCs can have their dispositions raised by completing simple quests. Raise an NPC’s disposition high enough, and they’ll let you take items from their homes.
    2. Most of the time, an NPC will only let you take cheap or worthless items. Not Katla, she’s got something much better to offer.
    3. Talk to Katla and harvest the crops for her. With her disposition raised, she’ll let you take a horse. Ride it out, it’ll follow you after fast-travelling too. The horse is now your’s.

Best way to get a horse for free, is to do the quest which requires you to steal Frost (a horse). You steal the ownership papers, take the horse and when you get to the NPC to give the horse and papers to him, you tell him “no”, kill him off, take your reward gold from his corpse, some good items and a free horse that looks pretty unique too.

I’m gonna have to try that Niserox. And I always wondered why in some houses taking items wasn’t stealing.

This works as far as being able to use the horse without getting in trouble for stealing. But once you get to where you’re going the horse turns arounds and will abandon you. Even after fast traveling on horseback sevetal times the horse begins his journey back home as soon as you dismount it.

The only time the horse will stay when you dismount is if you actually buy it. If you steal it or obtain it through means other than buying it, the horse will leave you.

Hey where is the frost horse quest located?

    Hey Synei88,

Start the quest for Frost in the Bee and Barb house in Riften. In there, look for a man named Louis Letrush. Talk to him to start the quest, called “Promises to Keep.”

That should get you in the right direction!

Yeah Frost is pretty easy to get, it looks cool and this one does stay with you wherever you go :) it counts as a bought horse, not like a stolen one.

Only weird thing is sometimes when i fasttravel to a stables the npc i took frost from is standing next to my horse lol (i didnt kill him, i persuaded him, telling i’d tell Maven about this if i didnt get the horse)

Outside Riften, beat the stable master (horse crusher dude) in a brawl.
You then take a horse and use it, and it stays ;)

(To nisrox) if you go tell the women your stealing the horse from she will tell you to go ahead with the plain, and that she will deal with the others later, when you go to steal frost, (which the horse is extremly strong and takes a lot of damage, one of the strongest in the game) if you are a sneak like me this place is a great way to level up, save constantly when you are there, try different things, i killed everyone in that place with a single blow silently to the throat or back with a dagger on adept difficulty, my sneak was around 58-60 and i left with 65. There are 3 stories, the is a women that sits on a bench and gets up and down every once and a while, she was the last one i kill, but i used her to level up my block from 20 to 70 since every time i go to the mountains to fight dragons my block wasnt good enough and i wasnt able to rank, so that helped :) hope it helps you.

If you tell the women that you are going to steal the horse it helps bc you wont get a bounty, there are some cases where you will get one, if you dont find the papers and you just take the horse

The problem with horses is that, for me at least, they keep dying. Now, I have around 180,000 gold from looting dungeons and grabbing everything that’s not nailed down, so paying for the horses is not a problem, but it is a pain. That being said, if you get the horse seller in riften to like you, you can borrow his horses, but they head home after you get off them. I would assume that this also holds true at any stables that sells horses, I just haven’t tried it because, as I said, I have enough money to buy a new one and I am busy doing other quests.

Every time I get a horse someone kills it…starting to make me mad. Now that I have a companion to carry stuff, I’m going to start taking everything as well to sell for the easy cash. I’m sick of buying horses and it taking most of my gold.

Just sneak and steal the horse, then fast travel. No money lost and a horse waiting for you when you go back to the stables to steal it again.

Shadowmere is the best horse in the game and he’s free. Just do the Dark Brotherhood questline and he’ll be given to you.

Horses can be earned in Riften by challenging Hofgrir, the stable owner, to a brawl. Once you win the battle of fists, he will offer to sell a horse to you. If you say that you would rather walk then he calls you cheap and you can ride the Riften horses for free. The free horse will walk away after dismounting. Although the horse is not technically not owned by the player, it will travel with you when you fast travel. A benefit to earning and using this free horse is that you can simply go to Riften and take a new horse if yours dies in battle which saves 1,000 of your hard earned gold.

I’ve found that when you buy a horse, it’ll follow you when you fast travel. If you decide to buy another horse, when you mount the new horse it will wander off. But, when you go to the stable you bought the first horse, the horse will be there, waiting. So, if you choose to buy a horse at all the stables, you’ll always have a spare horse.

Shadowmere is by far the best horse (so far, I haven’t gotten frost yet) because the horse JUST WON’T DIE!!!!! I mean literally. I have seen him die (actually killed him myself accidentally during a stormcloak mission), but when left area and came back there he was waiting for me.

Was leaving solitude when a dragon attacked and killed the stablemaster, After killing the dragon I looted the dead stablemaster and got his key, now I can take any solitude horse for free.

Half the time they’ll stay and even defend me, but then other times they just leave. They always appear after fast-travel. Convenient and better than blowing 1000 gold.

you can also get a free horse from the riften stables if you do a quest for the owner

I do not know where Solitude is, can anyone assist me with that, so far i’m in Whiterun.

    Kevin Thielenhaus

    On May 6, 2013 at 10:27 am

    @Jakayla,

To get to Solitude, travel northwest from Whiterun. You’ll want to make sure you enter Hjaalmarch Hold and cross the River Hjaal, then continue northwest to the Karth River. If you’re lost, look on the river for a large bridge called Dragon Bridge. Follow the path from the bridge north, and take the path leading east when there’s a fork. Solitude is the northwestern-most city in Skyrim, located on the eastern edge of Haafingar Hold.
