Building a house isn’t easy, neither is furnishing and improving it; which is what the new Hearthfire expansion is all about. Once you’ve got a sufficiently large home, you can hire a random Steward to bring in furniture, hire a carriage and bard, or bring you more building materials. It all costs money, and a lot of money, so why not save yourself some scratch by asking a loyal follower to become your Steward instead of hiring some random mercenary? Below we’ve got an expanding list of all known Followers that can become Stewards in Hearthfire.

There’s a lot more to Game Front’s Skyrim coverage; Find PC item codes, marriage options, easter eggs, an unlockable skeleton horse, and much, much more. Get lists of all the Elder Scrolls extras on Game Front with our Skyrim cheats, Dawnguard cheats, and Hearthfire cheats.

Home Stewards Guide

Before you get a Steward, learn how to get started on the home of your dreams with our Home-Building or Home-Buying guides.

  • Stewards can only be appointed in the new Hearthfire plots in The Pale, Hjaalmarch, and Falkreath.
  • Once you’ve finished the Small House and constructed a Main Hall, you’ll be able to appoint a Steward.
  • To appoint a Steward, lead your Follower, or a random Hireling, to your home. They’ll mention you may need a Steward. Speak with them to seal the deal.

Can Serana be a Steward?

Belrand offered to be my steward, but I didn’t accept immediately. He hasn’t offered again, nor does the option to appoint him appear. So, beware of that.

Name: aranea, finish the quest the black star
Name: Ahthor the Jailer / the helgen headsman, Favor Follower
and the list goes on; I recommend that if anyone has a skyrim game book
special edtion or the prima paper back version the follower section starts on page 62 and
ends on page 66 in the training chapter.

I brought Mjoll to my house and she hasnt offered and i cant ask her. Only Lydia has offered but i don’t want her. Anyone help?

Kevin Thielenhaus

On September 7, 2012 at 3:02 pm

@Dee,

I’ve read people have been able to get Mjoll to offer, while others have had a hard time convincing her. She may only work on certain plots.

@Ale,

Unfortunately, Serana is confirmed to not work.

Ingjard is a member of the Dawnguard and can be used as a steward

Ingjard is a member of the Dawnguard and can be used as a follower and Steward.

Have you thought about making a list of the followers that DON’T work as well? My husband and I have tried several followers to no avail… Frustrating, to say the least lol.

Hypothetically the steward list should at least in part be governed by the voice actors who have laid down the appropriate tracks. Any follower played by Claudia Christian, for example should be available as a steward. The same goes for any follower played by a house carl voice actor as well. Unfortunately, Serana is not included on this list, since to my knowledge the actress who plays her did not play any other character.

Sven is also a possible steward

Derkeethus, the argonian from Darkfall Cave, is an excellent choice for egg-brothers and sisters. However, rescuing him sometimes brings on a glitch where he will not leave the cave and only follow you within close proximity.

Kevin Thielenhaus

@Sugarbean29,

That’s a very good idea! We’ll update the page with a list of confirmed followers that we know don’t work. Thanks!

Llia will become a steward, but she will not become a follower again

Mockingjay87

Golldir, the follower from Hillgrund’s Tomb became my steward first try. You have to go to Hillgrund’s Tomb NW of Ivarstead and do the Ancestral Worship quest. After you leave and come back he’ll be outside and willing to be a follower, then a steward. I have him in Morthal, he’s been great. So far no glitches.

Derkeethus is elgible to be a steward? How? Because every other site is telling me otherwise. If he actually can become a steward, I’d love to know how.

Can a dark brotherhood initiate be a steward?

Kevin

On November 4, 2012 at 4:26 pm

You missed all of the other College apprentices and all of the other Companions. And there are a bunch of orcs in each stronghold. Also, can you please try to either put it in alphabetical order, or under subheadings of which factions they’re in?

Lauren

On November 5, 2012 at 10:56 am

Marcurio the mage you can hire in Riften. He’s a little glitchy, though.

Shelly

On November 12, 2012 at 7:28 am

I hired Sven from Riverwood as my steward. You can either favor Faendal or Sven in their quest over gaining Camillas favor in their love triangle quest, (I favored Sven cause he’s hot). I see Faendal is on this list so I thought I’d let everyone know Sven is also a possibility, just depends on which dude you side with in helping one or the other to win Camillas “love”

Jeff

On November 12, 2012 at 7:08 pm

Faendal lead bandits to my house one night and tried to kill me. I had to kill him after I killed all the rest of the bandits as he would not stop attacking me. I also noticed a nicely enchanted Orcish shield and my Blade of Woe went missing while he was my steward. Beware. Some stewards are thieves!

Gunrack

On November 28, 2012 at 9:21 pm

Ria in the companions works fine. There are a couple others in the guild that aren’t on the list. But they, just like ria, simply have the “follow me I need your help” speech option.

@Ale
do u know what ‘unable’ means? Serana is under the list of people that CAN’T be a steward, its the last list right above this conversation…

Mjoll the Lioness won’t work for me, and I really wanted her for my family house. She has a lovely voice and I was imagining her reading bedtime stories to my kids. *sigh* Oh well, I’m off to find another mothery type follower!

Fox

Celann of Dawnguard can be a steward

i count 3 vanilla followers missing(including the dark brotherhood initiate)

Kevin Thielenhaus

On April 23, 2013 at 11:24 am

@Travis Smith,

This is just a list of characters that can become stewards, we’ve got a whole different list of followers! As far as I’m aware, J’zargo cannot become a personal steward. Unless there was a change in the newest update, I’ve read that he’s a no-go.

Please let us know if that’s been changed! Thanks for the comments.

Cicero would be a hilarious steward! It’s a shame he’s unavailable…

Domenick

On July 12, 2013 at 9:56 am

Illidia, a mage who WAS part of a witch coven can become a steward if you help her destroy the witches and her mother. I think she is at the Brood Covern, but I don’t know. All i remember is it was an abandoned castle/ fort I found her at.

Ethan

On July 22, 2013 at 11:58 am

What about uthgerd and J’zargo? Do they work?

Kevin Thielenhaus

On July 22, 2013 at 12:25 pm

@Ethan,

I just gave it a try, and here’s what I got:

Uthgerd: Yep!
J’zargo: Nope

Ryan

On December 26, 2013 at 1:27 pm

J’zargo wasn’t listed. He cannot be a steward, so don’t try. Also, if anyone knows of any good male mage followers that can be a steward, please let me know. Thanks!

Yaking

Teldryn Sero can’t be one. He’s from Dragonborn DLC

Has anyone tried using the NPC editor on PC to create a steward from scratch? I don’t have much free time and will try eventually, but it would awefully convenient. Someone mentioned something about voice actors, whoever has dialogue recorded for stewardship, and it makes sense, so maybe any created NPC who has the same voice assigned as another eligible Steward would work. Worth a shot.
I realize there’s plenty of options umong the existing NPCs, but from a story perspective, I’d feel bad snatching someone away from their career as a mage or mercenary to make them my property manager. I mean, if u could just recruit some hobo off the street it would make his year, he’d probly be really enthusiastic about it. But in stead its like, “Brelyna, I know ur about to get ur tenure at the mage college, but I really need someone to clean my house. Come on.”
Plus u could make some crazy lookin stewards with the freedom of the NPC editor (custom colours and whatnot).
Anyway, I will let u all know when and if I get around to creating a steward. If anyone with more free time gives it a shot, let me know. Cheers.
