There’s a lot of empty land out in Skyrim, and in Hearthfire you’ll be able to own up to three chunks of it to call home. In three holds, you’ll be able to purchase an empty spot to construct your dream home. The trouble is just finding where you can purchase! Out of all the holds in Skyrim, only three are selling. Below, we’ll tell you who to talk to to find the option to purchase, what you might need to do, and the cost of ownership. There’s a lot more work to be done after buying, so make sure to keep watching Game Front as we update you with all the Hearthfire details.

I ran into a small glitch on my existing game (before downloading the DLC): the Jarl of Dawnstar had the option to ask about buying land disappear from the list as soon as I moved to select it and it would not come up again. Anyone else run into this?

Hearthfire finally came to the PS3, I bought it, installed it, went to Dawnstar and the Jarl will only talk about the supid civil war that has been over for a LOOOONG time. Anyone have a fix for this? I noticed it said I may have to comlete a radiant quest, can someone help please? Thanks!

Why does it say to Be sure to complete any misc. quests. ???

@Z7,

In some cities, the Jarl will not sell land to the player if their disposition isn’t high enough. Completing Radiant Quests for the Jarl will improve his mood towards the player — in one area, that appears to be practically a requirement. You don’t necessarily HAVE to complete misc. quests, but if the Jarl or their steward isn’t selling land, players might need to complete some misc. quests for them. It’s annoyingly complicated, I know!

What you need to do is talk to the stewards usually. that is what I did and it worked perfectly. If you are having trouble finding your land plot, go to misc. quests and select it and it should bring you to your land.

won't work

On January 24, 2014 at 2:19 pm

i have done all of the quests for all of the jarls and it won’t let me buy any of the lands, i have the legendary edition of skyrim so hearthfire is already downloaded but the option to buy a plot of land won’t come up.
any1 have any suggestions?

@ won’t work

The legendary edition comes with all three add-ons already downloaded and on the disc, but you need to navigate to it and actually install it. After it’s installed you load skyrim like usual and all the add-on content (for whichever add-on you select, you can choose which ones to install and when to install them) will be available.

@ others

You have to complete some minor radiant quests for the people of the hold before the jarl will sell you the land, even after you complete the jarl’s quest. He likes you, but can’t just go selling land to you when his people don’t know who you are. After you complete 3 misc quests for the hold people you will be able to purchase land.

When you are ready to move load everything you have and then ride your horse to your new home and unload everything in a chest.
