Vampires were cool in Oblivion, but Skyrim had to top that somehow. This time around, the developers at Bethesda bring us Lycanthropy, AKA werewolves. Sure, you could get mauled by a werewolf and catch the disease, or you could join up with the Companions for a safe ritual to become a truly powerful werewolf, with control over your transformations. There are some serious benefits to become a hairy wolf giant, so read on to find out just how to become a werewolf.

Surviving in Skyrim isn’t easy, so you might want to check out our massive text and video walkthrough for Skyrim. If you’re in need of secrets, hints, tips and tricks, check out the cheats page.

Find the new perks for werewolves exclusive to the Dawnguard DLC HERE.

How To Become A Werewolf

  1. Complete a quest for the Jarl of Dragonreach in Whiterun to begin your journey to lycanthropy. From there, drop by the Companions faction. They’ll give you a series of quests to complete.
  2. Finish every quest they give you until you complete the chain, and the Companions will send you on one final job. To gather some items before meeting them in the Underforge.
  3. In the Underforge, you’ll enter into the ritual to become a werewolf. Now, you’ll need to figure out where to find a cure…
  4. The benefits of becoming a Werewolf are; your health and stamina increase by 100, your sprinting speed becomes faster than a horse’s gallop.
  5. You gain a new shout that instills fear in enemies and summons wolves, while also gaining some hand-to-hand melee damage bonuses. You’re also a criminal, and will be hunted by guards while in werewolf form.
  6. There are drawbacks; you can’t use spells, equip items, or loot corpses in wolf-form. You also won’t be able to talk to NPCs.
  7. Your werewolf form will also scare away NPCs, or turn them hostile towards you. If you’re caught transforming into a werewolf, it’s counted as a major crime.
  8. Beware, you’re also weak against silver!
  9. Transforming into a werewolf is temporary, so the change isn’t permanent. If you do change into a werewolf, try to do it far away from civilization.

If you happen to get tired of being a werewolf, don’t worry. There is a cure.

Wait, are you forced to transform every night?

Kevin Thielenhaus

On November 11, 2011 at 2:23 pm

After contracting lycanthropy, you gain a special power that allows you to transform into a werewolf for several (2.5, about.) seconds. If you feed on defeated enemies, the effect will last longer. Otherwise, you’ll transform back to human form. Just don’t let guards see you transform.

I remember the Morrowind Bloodmood expansion… oh werewolves, you should be in everything, ever, for the rest of eternity.

Wait… this doesn’t say I have to actually join the Companions. Is that the case? If so please tell me, I really wanna be a werewolf and so far the only known way to officially become one with out using Hircine’s ring is this. I’m just not 100S% I wanna join the Companions though.

Same i bought this game since it came out and ive been playing a while now, its quite impresive, not everything improved unfortunately, like the guards they still magically appear and know whne you kill someone even in an empty house, so you cant kill the victim like in front of them that sucks, if anyone wants armor i recomend ding the thieves guild, they give you the nightingale armor, witch is bad ass, nice stats and looks great, plus a once a day power thats pretty good, otherwise join the dark brotherhood, their armor is pretty nice as well, plus a free word “death mark”, so far i want to be a werewolf, it seems ttally asweome, but i still doubt how long does it really last without feeding, and can i controll it?especially on full moons?

Shawn

On November 15, 2011 at 7:28 pm

@Ace You only change into a werewolf when YOU choose to. Moons matter not. Feeding only serves to prolong the duration of being a werewolf while in wolf form, and you have complete control over when you become a werewolf (aside from the first, that always happens).

On November 16, 2011 at 5:02 pm

I just finished mage college, Dark brotherhood and the thieves guild and now doing companions, (not surprised that I am a leader of all that XD), and even tho in oblivion the thieves guild story sucked, I think its freaking awesome in Skyrim, maybe even the best, and the armor… OH man it looks so badass after you become a nightingale (+ I love automatic invisibility while starting to sneak)

Zevas

On November 16, 2011 at 7:04 pm

dude you can be a werewolf? i think i might just stop my quest im doing and go do that…but i wonder if you can be a vampire and a werewolf at the same time?

Jacksparrow1988

On November 16, 2011 at 8:39 pm

you can be both at once . hair color doesnt matter. did the game twice being a werewolf and w diff hair and was just the usual color both times. pc question i wouldnt know my comp was too old for oblivion even so 360 to me is way better.

praetorian

On November 16, 2011 at 11:55 pm

A couple things to note. 1: You do not level up your character when you kill enemies as a warewolf so basically you are only doing it to kill upper level enemies and loot their bodies when you turn back to a human. 2: Be somewhere safe when you turn back because you are left naked with no armor or weapons equipped. 3: You can’t talk to anyone so don’t be a warewolf if you are on a quest.

Once you have become a ware wolf, to turn back you have to select magic, then powers, then the warewolf power. I chose to make it a favorite by pressing the f key which places a small arrow next to it. Then go back to the live game and press z to activate your power. To access your favorites in the game press q.

Jacksparrow1988

On November 17, 2011 at 8:44 am

lol this was much less vague than i was i did it on my phone while hooked on the game still. i do have some Q’s myself tho… Whats the max level cap for the character and can u put more than 1 enchantment into items at all? and last are the black soul gems like in oblivion?

Artherta

On November 18, 2011 at 3:52 am

If ur a werewolf can u turn to a vampire? Doing the opposite of curing vampireism??? O.o

Jacksparrow1988

On November 18, 2011 at 9:10 am

nevermind i found out my black soul gem question on my own. in a village to the far snowy east (forgot the name of it offhand) theres a dark elf conjurer who has one u can pick pocket. not sure about multiple enchantments to items yet or if u can b a vampire and werewolf both but would like to know the answers to both those if anyone knows hit me up yo

LordSithis

On November 20, 2011 at 8:57 am

You can’t be vampire and werewolf at the same time, both come with immunity to diseases, so if your a werewolf, the lyncathropy would make it so you can’t catch the polyphric hemophilia, or whatever the vampirism disease is, and vice versa. If your already a werewolf and want to be a vampire, you’d have to use a witch head at the tomb at the end of the companion quest chain to cure yourself and THEN go catch vampirism lol (also for the guy asking earlier, to use beast mode on PC, go into your magic menu, go down to powers, click on beast mode, exit magic menu, press Z to transform)

I did the Stormcloaks (Rebellion) storyline, so the Jarl of Dragonsreach was captured by our army and replaced by the Gray-Mane Jarl, can I still do the mission or does it have to be with the previous Jarl?

EmilyPlzz;)

On November 21, 2011 at 5:38 am

I need urgent news. Do you HAVE to do that job from the jarl is that recommended or optional? Plzz reply.

Chronofox

On November 21, 2011 at 8:53 am

The max enchantments you can put on any equipment is 2 and only 2. You cannot enchant an armor and then try to enchant it with its second enchantment. You must put both enchantments on the equipment. You can only place 2 enchantments on your armor when your Enchantment Skill is level 100 and you’ve selected the perk.

You also cannot become a werewolf and a vampire at the same time. There are only two ways of becoming a werewolf… Either by contracting it through bite from a feral werewolf or by joining the Companions in Whiterun after completing a series of quests. Vampirism is the same… You must contract it from another vamp or join the group.

If you cure yourself of the lycanthropy disease, you will not be able to contract it ever again, so make sure you think about it first before curing yourself.

Attila

On November 23, 2011 at 5:44 am

I just became a werewolf the other day. Its not that bad, you get super speed, and some strength but you cant do anything else. so if you get hurt, you need to kill someone to heal, and keep this bloodlust on you. you can transform at will and thats pretty cool, also it gives you 100% chance to be immune to diseases so no more carrying disease potions, but now i wanna see what happens when your a vampire, because me and my daedric gear are better than werewolf form.

Cam

On November 23, 2011 at 11:32 am

So does anyone know how to cure the werewolf disease?
I’m over it now, and you can get the Well-Rested perk, so levelling up is taking its time…
I have completed the companion quest line, and have talked to all the people in that companion place, but I can’t find the quest for the cure.
Anyone know??
Thanks!

If you’re a beast species, either a Kahjiit or an Argonian, can you still become a Werewolf?

sadie

On November 23, 2011 at 9:32 pm

ok so i honestly think becoming a werewolf is wayyyy better than becoming a vampire, i just thought it was funny though because im a katjhiit (a cat) and im going to be transforming into a werewolf (a dog) its funny. also what happens when you get married, like does your husband/wife follow you around and help you like a housecarl or sumthing?

also Attila you dont want to become a vampire, i was attacking a vampire once and accedentally got the disease and didnt know untill like the 2nd day. you can cure yourslef with a cure disease potion in the first 3 days, but after that you to cure yourself you can talk to the people at the front desk at an inn to get a quest that takes you to morthal and there is a guy who practices things with black magic, you talk to him about curing the vampire disease and he will give you a black soulgem and all you have to do is fill it with a human soul. but the catch is is that you have to either find a scroll that lets you capture a soul( wich is really hard from my experience) or find a weapon the is enchanted to do that. i looked everywhere for a scroll but the disease just got worsee and soon people could tell i was a vampire in day or night so i couldnt go to any towns (wich really sucked :\) (but the cool part was that i had fangs :D ) in order to hide you being a vampire you need to feed on sleeping enimies or people (wich is also really hard to do) so i suggest not to become a vampire(well it is your choice).

MaleKhajiit

On November 23, 2011 at 9:48 pm

Ok so im a male Khajiit, and im also a werewolf! Now i want to get married and already have Grelka from Riften in mind! Maramal sold me the amulet(I stole it from somewhere and placed it back in his pocket and bought it). But still i can’t get her to marry me (I have the amulet equipped), so does anyone know what her quest is as i cant see it and do i have to do the quest for the temple first or is it purely the fact that im a werewolf and can’t get married?

Tacanacy

Anyone who knows how much points you loose by being a werewolf and unable to get sleep bonuses because of it?? When I meet bears or sabre tigers, so can I just turn into a werewolf and kill them much more easier or just scare them off, but if the sleep bonuses are actually very useful, then I will find the cure, and find it fast too.

I am thinking of becoming a wherewolf and have a few questions. I read some place that when you change back to human you are naked and without any wepons. Is that true? Of so, what happens to all your stuff?
And can you kill people in wolf form and tjene change back to human and steel their gold?
I also read that people get hostile towards you, but that is just in wolf form? Or?
Is there anything else negative with beeing a wolf?

@Sarah yes, after turning back to human u r naked. all ur items will be in ur inventory u will lose nothing, they will just be unequipped. u cannot see the charr menu while in the wolf form at all and only way of canceling is to rest a few hours by pressing ‘t’. and i havent tried anything else so far

Hijetala

On November 29, 2011 at 2:39 am

btw i found a way to fix the dual cast bug. if it happens to u, just equip weapons, then unequip them so u have empty hands and afther that just double click on any spell and u can dual cast again ^^

if you become a werewolf does this mean you must cure it inorder to marry

The Great Tarminus

On December 5, 2011 at 8:18 pm

Ok few facts.
Yes you can still marry as a Werewolf. Yes you can cure yourself you take one of the witches heads you killed to finish the Companions quest to free the Harbinger from his curse. Just bring an extra one with you or go back with a head and throw it into the fire you will have to fight your wolf beast but after that you are free from the curse as well. To transform again you need to select it from your powers skill tab. After you transform it automatically removes it from your power/shouts button (aka for xbox RB button)so you need to go in and reselcet it.

Okay, this is for the PC version only;

To change into a werewolf, press TAB, click ‘Magic’ then select ‘Powers’ Then select ‘Beast form’ (Doing so will clear any other shouts/powers active) and then hit ‘Z’ This will make your character change into a werewolf. (Remember to never do this in sight of a guard, try not to do this in front of anyone for that matter)

–YOU DO NOT HAVE TO COMPLETE THE JARL’S QUEST–

You do keep your items after transformation and you do start off naked (Not entirely, If it was entirely I would immediately change my character to a girl ;)

To run on all four’s, hold ‘Left ALT’

To exit werewolf form, press ‘T’ and wait until 6:00 AM

Cheers -Zombeh ;)

if you have the werewolf ring it will last longer. You get the ring from a quest in the town by the the dark brotherhood place you talk to the 2 parents and you ask them what happened and they say a guy ripped apart their little girl and then you get a quest you go to the jail house and you talk to the guy in human from and you tell him you’ll help him he’ll give you the ring and then you will get a another quest that you have to kill a white stag, when you do the spirit of the hunt will talk you you and give a quest to kill the guy that gave you the ring. You go the cave and talk to the guy in werewolf from and tell him again that you’ll help him and then you kill all the hunters and then you leave the cave and talk to the hunt spirit again and he tells you to keep the ring and your a werewolf and you turn at night you will turn when ever it wants. I was just wondering, didn’t find anything about the pros and cons about “werewolfing”. any1 know?? :)

Meh

On December 30, 2011 at 11:39 am

Only cons I can think of:

1. No restful sleep.

2. Like a Vampire a Werewolves beast form is naturally shunned causing some nps to attack you on sight. Unlike Vampirism being a Werewolf is not a crime so long as you don’t show your beast form in public.

3. If your a Vampire and get bitten by a Werewolf you become a Werewolf, the lycan affliction automatically causes poison and disease to be removed. Its a positive thing but not so positive if you role play a Vampire because Vampirism is a disease.

Ever since I became a werewolf, I can not absorb Dragon souls, I killed 2 now and both times the Dragon just lays there and does not Burn up and let me absorb it, anyone else run across this? If so, is it werewolf related?

@ Cristian, go to magic and look for BeastForm and no you don’t have to turn in to a werewolf everynight, you can turn anytime you want.

I need to do the companions quest so that I can get to the word wall and learn toor , the second word of power for fire breath, but I’m not sure I want to become a werewolf. For one there’s the part where you don’t automatically heal by standing still. Or when you heal and regain energy by going to sleep. Does this happen in werewolf form or both werewolf and human form. Cause if it happens in both than I don’t want it. But I really love the fire breath shout so please help me.

DarkElvesRule

On January 10, 2012 at 3:47 am

sadie, you can buy the soul trap spell book from the same guy who cures you of vampirism. For those of you who want to be vampires, it’s not worth it. Stage 1 doesn’t have many perks. You get like 1 special power which isn’t even that great, plus weakness to sun and fire. Weakness to fire sucks when you have to fight a fire breathing dragon. You don’t get the really cool powers until stage 4. By the time your stage 4, you can’t do anything because everybody attacks you. I’m just glad I got cured from the vampire curse. Being a were wolf looks pretty cool though. I’m going to try to become a were wolf tonight.

you can also become a werewolf by finding one in the wild and getting the kicked out of you. however finding a werewolf in the wild is damn near impossible and you won’t be able to control your transformations. it can happen at any time even during the day.

Wet Taco

On January 16, 2012 at 11:26 pm

there is also a silver hand hideout kinds north west of windhelm but im not sure where it is . there is a werewolf in one of the cages. just pick the lock and get slapped halfway across the room. if you become a companion you will eventually go there to kill the silver hand leader and get the pieces of the axe back.

On January 21, 2012 at 7:35 pm

Hey guys, this is kinda weird but I got the PC version and my first quest to become a werewolf was to go defeat the Valtheim Leader at his towers, which NOBODY got. Everyone else went to fist-fight Mikael or someone else, so I was kinda worried that my quests would be different.
Anywho, if you do get that as your first one don’t worry because the next few missions are normal and easy to accomplish***. Enjoy being a Werewolf!

***BESIDES “Proving Honor”. That mission is RIDICULOUSLY long, and the tunnels just NEVER end. It took me about a solid hour to get through it and I leveled up a ton haha but seriously the creators at Bethesda should have shortened that, seeing as you dont even become a werewolf after that.

Okay just to straighten things out (at least this is what I have found) people make the mistake of goin from NPc to NPc in the companions rather than sticking to one for example always talking to aela for missions and it took me:
1 brawl
1 ice wraith
1silver hand and boom your a werewolf
But what I’m trying to say is pick one quest giving companion and stick with it

On January 27, 2012 at 2:03 am

Hey, the first job i got in the companions (After giving Aela her shield and Earlgund a sword), i was tasked with taking out an entire cave of vampires, and when i first walk in the vampire just s me up on a couple of hits. Any way to decline a quest?

Helping Hand

On January 28, 2012 at 3:01 am

Darthslay3r – go into your game options and lower the difficulty; this’ll mean the vamps are way easier. No shame in it – I had to do the same thing at Saarthal.

The Mage – Yes, of course you can! You can join as many organisations as you want, and it won’t affect any other thing you join. I was Archmage too when I joined the Companions. Unlike RPGs like Baldur’s Gate, you don’t need to complete missions in order to maintain your role. Just pop in now and again and bone up on what needs doing if you’re bothered.

About Marriage – You can marry quite a few people, and gender/race doesn’t matter – look up a guide for a list of people you can marry. Being a Werewolf has absolutely no effect – I married Farkas. If you’ve got your heart set on someone, and they are a marriageable character (check a list, such as the Gamespot one, or the Elder Scrolls Wiki), do a quest for them to get them to like you. If they are a hireling, hire them and try the Mara magic on them after. I did all the Companions missions up to becoming a werewolf before doing all the quests for the Temple of Mara in Riften – half of Jorrvaskar was after me when I put the amulet on! Only downside to being married to Farkas is that he never sleeps. Three upsides to marriage are that they make you a Homecooked Meal, which ups your health and stamina, that if you aren’t a Werewolf you get a Lover’s Comfort sleep bonus which increases the speed at which your skills level up for a very limited time, and you get profits from their job as well as the ability to buy/sell things off them/to them. The downside is that it can get a bit cringey having previously macho characters constantly refer to you as ‘love,’ or ‘dear,’ and that you can’t actually get a divorce unless you kill them. Choose carefully!
P.S There are no marriageable Khajit or Bosmer. I wanted to marry J’zargo and couldn’t :( And yes, you can marry someone of the same gender ^^ Aela was after me something awful!

About the werewolf mission: I consistently went to Farkas for my missions and it didn’t take that long at all – like other guides have said, stick with one NPC and just do every mission they give you. It won’t take long. Be warned, though – there is one location during the mission that can be a bit glitchy and once you leave, you may not be able to go back. It’s a cave which has four levers inside – if you’ve stuck to the chain fairly well, this is the mission before you become a werewolf (at least if you talk to Farkas). Try not to leave the cave.

IF YOU GET REALLY STUCK CHECK A GUIDE! There are absolutely hundreds online, all with the goal of sorting out that problem. Elder Scrolls Wiki or Gamespot are huge helps!
Happy gaming! :)

i become a werewolf but then cured myself. ive come to regret it because i didnt realize aela doesnt change and i married her. haha i also want to do hircine’s quest and get the ring. ive been seaching for means to get around this “unbreakable” cure and become a werewolf again, tho it seems nobody has an answer or even a lead. i could keep trying and hope this game will glitch like it always has (like ive noticed for alot of people) but i was hoping theres someone out there who has had such luck and any advice. otherwise i might be starting all over again… :/

Dante Sparda

On February 17, 2012 at 8:38 am

Guys I was thinking, if you FIRST become a vampire and THEN join the companions and become a werewolf do you think it would work? I mean if you don’t cure the vampirism and you decide to join the companions ( the werewolf IS a NECESSARY part of the companion’s story mode)would they still let you join them?

johnny knoxville

On February 19, 2012 at 3:40 pm

becoming a werewolfe cures vamparism and i think it works the other way around too but there is a sidequest to cure werewolfeism with the companiones

Dante Sparda

On February 22, 2012 at 1:36 am

Johnny^^ I dunno but I think it could work because the vampirism gives you 100% Invulnerability against lycanthropy and other way around. However if the companions let you join them, since it does not cure you but it defends you, I think it would be possible to be a hybrid. I haven’t tried but I will :)

Nina

On February 23, 2012 at 6:13 am

But if you are a vampire at stage 4, (when they attack you) and if you want to become a werewolf, you can join the Companions to become one, but if you’re being attacked how can you become a werewolf? Cause I want that when vampirism is not cool ;)

Nina

You have to go to the companions and do 4-5 misions to become a werewolf (there are other side missions after that too) and there is no way to have sex in skyrim. to marry you have to visit the temple of mara and buy an amulet of mara. it costs 200 gold and when wearing it you can ask people if they want to marry you. i would suggest marrying aela the huntress of the companions so you can trade with her and take 800 gold a day.

It really doesn’t matter when you change it’s where you change. Once I actually changed after I killed that guy who’s first in command of the imperials in front of lot’s of storm cloaks and they just looked at me like “that guy is weird! I want nothing to do with him!” after a few changes, I guess they got annoyed cause I had to get out of solitude(or I just turned into human form and hid).
