Sniper Elite 3 Sets Sights on 2014 Release
What will it be? Plain old Nazis or Nazi zombies?
In early September, Rebellion announced the sequel to its surprise Sniper Elite V2 undead spinoff, Nazi Zombie Army 2. The studio just announced that it will also give the living some love with Sniper Elite 3.
Set for launch on PC and next gen consoles sometime in 2014, Sniper Elite 3 will continue the story of OSS sniper Karl Fairburne during World War II, Rebellion said in a statement. New environments, a new storyline (set in Africa according to the logo and trailer below), and a “more refined gameplay experience” are all on tap.
“We’ve got some great ideas to improve on what we did before and feedback from fans has been invaluable,” Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley stated. “Sniper Elite V2 was just the beginning of what we want to do with the franchise, there are things we didn’t have time to do before that we can really look at featuring this time. We want to focus on making this latest incarnation of Sniper Elite more of a sandbox game but also build on the awesome X-Ray Kill Cam and the atmospheric World War II setting. We’re looking forward to seeing what Sniper Elite fans and gamers in general make of the latest chapter in the story.”
The biggie for me is the focus on making Sniper Elite more of a sandbox game. Sniper Elite V2 appeared big and open, but it was really a linear experience that pushed players down a set path. That severely limited the creative options for getting through missions.
That said, the X-Ray cam made for some seriously satisfying sniping, and there is a ton of potential for sneaky, creative killing. Hopefully it will be fulfilled in Sniper Elite 3.
