SOCOM Successor H-Hour: World’s Elite Unveiled

Sony is taking the last of its SOCOM servers offline this month, effectively plunging a knife into the heart of the third-person tactical shooter genre.

A bit melodramatic? Sorry, like many of you I have fond memories of intense, team-based battles in SOCOM II on the PlayStation 2. Alas, RIP SOCOM… and long live H-Hour: World’s Elite!

David Sears, creative director on SOCOM I and II, hopes to keep third-person tactical shooters alive with his new project, H-Hour. Sears got the project started with a Kickstarter campaign that raised $252,000. That money is being put toward an H-Hour demo that Sears and his new SOF Studios will use to pitch the project to publishers or seek alternative funding. The demo is coming along nicely, and SOF offered a peek at the pre-alpha gameplay today with this video:

Sears says the goal now is to polish and fine tune the demo build, pitch it to publishers later this year, and, if all goes according to plan, ship H-Hour: World’s Elite for PC and PlayStation 4 in January 2015.

Good luck to the folks at SOF Studios!

Awesome! Glad to see how much people had love for Socom and the third person shooters. I really miss Socom 2 and never understood why Zipper wouldn’t just remake the game for ps3 when they had so many forums and fans who wanted it. Socom 2 was and will always be the greatest game ever.
