SOE Aims To Ease PlanetSide 2′s F2P Grinding

Everyone knows that the trade off for playing an MMO free to play is that you’re punished for not spending any money by being ruthlessly taxed, timewise, for leveling up. Obviously, microtransactions that help you advance are the bread and butter by which F2P games, um, be breakfast food (??). But can a FTP MMO make it easier on free players to enjoy the game? Sony apparently thinks so, because they’ve made PlanetSide 2 with that goal in mind.

“Our goal here is to reduce the overall time investment for weapons by about 30% on the top end weapon unlocks,” lead designer Matt Higby said on the forums. The changes include doubling the speed at which you’ll earn cert points, and will go live when the game launches tomorrow.

In typical sony fashion my guess will be that Sony speeds up how fast you get to the end game because all the guns, armor and etc which is needed to compete at that level is probably ALL paid gear. If not, I know sony has found some other ‘Bully Marketing’ technique to make sure a majority of players feel pressured to spend money just to have fun, let alone actually compete and have fun.
