SOE “Likely” Making Single $15 Sub Good for All its Games

One sub to rule them all?

That’s the Sauron-style proposition Sony Online Entertainment President John Smedley is currently considering.

In a not-quite-an-AMA post on the PlanetSide 2 subReddit, Smedley explained how and why SOE is making changes to PlanetSide 2′s subscription plans. He used the post to drop this bombshell (emphasis added):

“We are considering (and are likely going to move forward with) a plan that means if you subscribe to one of our games you are a subscriber to all our games (this applies to PC titles only btw).. all for the current $14.99 a month. That’s a benefit most companies simply can’t offer because they don’t have our portfolio of games. The goal would be to let you pick an item in each game you play. Some of you might say, ‘Well who cares..I only play Planetside 2. How is that a benefit to me?’ My answer is simple – we’ve got a great lineup of games, some of which aren’t announced yet that cater to a lot of players. We have EQN and EQNL coming along with other….. games… that PS2 players might just like :)

If that new subscription program was launched today, it would cover DC Universe Online, PlanetSide 2, Dragon’s Prophet, EverQuest, EverQuest 2, Wizardry Online, PoxNora, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, Free Realms, and Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures. It would become an even more intriguing proposition later this year when EverQuest Next and EverQuest Next Landmark go live.

In the age of free-to-play, subscriptions are a rarity. But SOE just might be onto something with its Super Sub. I’m an anti-subscription gamer, always have been, but getting a ton of in-game stuff in EQ Next, Landmark, PS2, DCUO and these “other… games…” Smedley hints at for $15 a month just might be enough for me to pry open my wallet.
