SOE Unveils User Generated Content Plans for Planetside 2
Sony Online Entertainment has unveiled plans for its persistent online first-person shooter, Planetside 2, to support user generated content. The idea behind the scheme is to allow for users to construct their own bases on continents and maintain permanent strongholds that they can opt to defend from enemy incursions.
“Longer-term, our plans for user-generated content are allowing players to do things like build their own bases on continents,” said Creative Director Matt Higby (via ShackNews) of the robust user creation tools they plan to develop. “Maybe a continent that’s empty and requires players to go out there and gather or consume resources to be able to place bases.”
Unfortunately, this is still a long way off from coming to fruition. In the shorter term, the studio plans to release a version of Player Studio—an item creation tool used in FreeRealms and EverQuest—for Planetside 2.
“Essentially, you, as a player, can create new helmets or skins for weapons. Send them to us and if they look cool and they pass the art director’s muster, then we put them in and people can download them and use them in the game,” Higby said.
“And you, as the artist, receive a portion of our sales that we get for those.”
