Somebody Already Hit Level 80 in Guild Wars 2 (UPDATED)
French player Surfeuze managed to crank all the way up to level 80 just by making items and weapons, using materials donated by his mates in the guild War Legend. That doesn’t mean he’ll be able to now breeze through the rest of the game, since Guild Wars 2 scales to a player’s level, but he is able to walk through the entire game, as well as use the best gear.
That doesn’t mean you can do the same thing, however. On Reddit, ArenaNet’s Mike O’Brian said the developer has been made aware of several ways that players can level very fast through the game — and those things are being fixed “as I type,” he said.
Meanwhile, if Guild Wars 2 should unlock for many of us U.S. players tonight at midnight Pacific time.
Update: More information has come in from War Legend members, as was pointed out by commenter Fyce. In fact, Surfeuze played through game content until he hit Level 60. After that, he started the crafting, using items farmed and donated by his guildmates.
Update the second: ArenaNet confirms that Surfeuze’s race to 80 is legitimate and that he didn’t exploit the game to do it. While other players ArenaNet had been in contact with had discovered a “technique” that allowed them to level more quickly than the designers intended, Surfeuze was able to do it in just 32 hours mostly because of the support of his guildmates and his dedication. ArenaNet says that he’s the first level 80, both in terms of speed and legitimacy. So whatever they were “fixing” as mentioned above, is still getting fixed — it just has nothing to do with Surfeuze.
