Yesterday, Sonic the Hedgehog turned 16. Yep, the little blue guy that has always run ridiculously fast wherever he goes is old enough to drive now. Granted, Sonic’s current image isn’t nearly as good as it once was. I don’t know how many of you have tried out Sonic on the Wii, but it doesn’t exactly do the series any favors.
However, SEGA isn’t planning to let Sonic go gently into that good night. In fact, they’re planning a full-on resurrection. In a recent interview, SEGA of America president, Simon Jeffery, said, “We are actually undergoing a fairly considerable refresh of Sonic as an intellectual property, as a character. Sonic on the Wii is probably the first product that’s come to market that reflects that. We’re not going to be bringing another game out on the other platforms for quite some time, because we feel that it is time to reinvent Sonic, to make Sonic contemporary again.” He continued on, saying, “Sonic is still an extremely endearing character; there’s still a lot of love for Sonic out there in consumerland.”
Unfortunately for SEGA, the reinvention on the Wii left a lot to be desired. However, with the upcoming Mario / Sonic Olympic Game, and the recent news that Bioware is developing a Sonic MMO for the Nintendo DS, maybe SEGA’s grand plan will come to fruition after all. If not, Sonic can take comfort in the fact that he can legally drink in Canada in two years.

Even though the Wii version was acclaimed better than the PS3/360 version. Besides, the last few Sonic games have been..ahem, ‘sub-standard’, so Secret Rings gave it enough oomph to keep it going. That’s the way I see it anyhow.

I’d say Secret Rings was decent. Good not great. But as I understand it, that game was meant to feel more like classic Sonic, the opposite of reinventing him… Anyways, I like Sonic, but my Sonic Team loyalties are with NiGHTS. Thats the Sega sequal to look forward to for now.
