Sony Confirms Layoffs at UK Studios

Several of Sony’s UK-based studios have been hit with layoffs.

SCEE has confirmed that developers including Evolution Studios, Guerrilla Cambridge and SCE London have all been affected by restructuring efforts that have resulted in an unknown number of staff eliminations. These layoffs come only a month after similar reductions at Sony Santa Monica and, according to the company, are just a routine matter of business.

“Regular reviews take place throughout SCE Worldwide Studios, ensuring that the resources that we have in such a competitive business can create and produce high quality, innovative and commercially viable projects,” said Sony in a statement. “As part of this process, we have reviewed and assessed all current projects and have decided to make some changes to some of our European Studios. As a result of this, there will be a focused restructure within London Studio, Guerrilla Cambridge Studio and Evolution Studio to ensure that the SCE WWS is in the best position to achieve their goals going forward.”

Evolution Studios is currently working on the postponed racing title Driveclub. Guerrilla Cambridge recently wrapped up work on Killzone: Mercenary. SCE London, of course, was behind The Playroom, which was released as free software on the PS4. Despite these staff reductions Sony has affirmed that its “first party development studios are key to our creative strategy” and that it’s “very excited about the future projects being worked on.”

Hate to see developers get hit with layoffs as soon as their game is released. I understand that a studio adds employees to help finish the game on time, and after release does not need as many programmers. However, what incentive do teams have to finish a game, if they think they are going to be without a job after it is released? How can developers continue to work on their IP and enhance it’s features, if half of who worked on them before are now gone? Hopefully these people can form their own studios or create indie games so their talent can truly be appreciated.
