Sony Has a New PlayStation Marketing Campaign

For whatever reason, we love to be marketed to. Just look at the Super Bowl, that bizarre occasion when non-sports fans actually gather to watch advertising. PlayStation fanboys love their marketing as much as any group, thanks in large part to the creation of that lovable fictional Sony executive Kevin Butler. Now, with the new price drop on the PS3, Sony is rolling out a new ad campaign, Long Live Play, starring Butler, and they’re telling you about it on the PlayStation Blog.

Now, the PlayStation Blog is typically a place reserved for news about games, but today they’re talking about games marketing. Seeing as how the PlayStation Blog is itself a form of marketing, that makes this marketing for marketing, which is weird.

Beginning today you’ll find “Long Live Play” rolling out on some of your favorite websites, TV networks and retailers as well as across numerous social networking outlets.

This is news! You’ll be seeing new commercials for a console you already own! Wow!

Yes, I get that Kevin Butler also serves as entertainment in addition to being a marketing tool, but it just seems a little off to me that the blog post announcing this new campaign features a parade of excited comments from readers.

But maybe that’s just me. Here’s the announcement vid for the new campaign.

My Fav Commercial:

The one with secret government agency that is interested in the weapons featured in Racket and Clank and Kevin is trying to explain those weapons are ofcourse not real but the money has already been deposited. The expression on his face makes me laugh every time I watch it.
