Sony: PlayStation 4 Sales Top 5.3 Million

A lack of games, next gen or otherwise, hasn’t stopped gamers from gobbling up the PlayStation 4. Sony announced today that, according to its own data, the PS4 has sold more than 5.3 million units worldwide.

In a brief statement issued this morning, Sony spread the word on the PlayStation 4′s ongoing strong sales.

“I am thrilled that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play throughout and beyond the holiday season,” SCE CEO Andrew House stated. “We are delighted that according to the NPD Group’s latest data, PS4 was January’s top-selling console in the United States. The PS4 system’s momentum just keeps growing stronger, and we are extremely grateful for the continued passion and support of PlayStation fans. February 22 sees the launch of PS4 in Japan, and I’m looking forward to Japanese fans sharing the excitement of the deep social capabilities and entertainment experiences only possible on PS4.”

I had to read those last couple lines twice. It’s true — the PS4 has yet to launch in Japan, its home country where the PlayStation has been king for a decade-plus. So we should expect that 5.3 million number to jump significantly by the end of February.

As for the Xbox One, last we heard Microsoft’s new console had sold more than 3 million units before the end of 2013. MS has yet to disclose total sales since then, but according to the NPD group, the PS4 outsold the Xbox One by a margin of two-to-one in January.

Expect sales for both new consoles to increase significantly in March when they finally get some new games to play, including Titanfall, Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, and Infamous: Second Son.
