Sony’s Tretton Says “It’s About Being the Best” in the Next Gen

Jack Tretton, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, emphasized during an interview with GameTrailersTV that Sony has never been about being first or cheapest. “It’s about being the best,” says Jack.

This was in response being asked about the race into the next generation, given that Sony’s PS3 release lagged just behind Microsoft’s Xbox 360. Jack talked staying power and how Sony has “tended to be relevant on a worldwide basis,” a quick jab to Microsoft perhaps, considering how ridiculously poorly the Xbox sells in places like Japan despite being the leading console in the US.

Jack continued: “If you can build a better machine, and it’s gonna come out a little bit later, that’s better than rushing something to market that’s gonna run out of gas for the long term.”

Now whether this is just a bit of defensive word-fu or an honest assessment of Sony’s stance, it’s hard to say. What we can say is that Sony continually produces superior platform-exclusive games (at least in terms of graphical and creative prowess), and we’re super excited about both Last of Us and Beyond.
