Source Filmmaker Reveals Source Engine 2?

Industrious Valve fans have examined the inner workings of the Source Filmmaker and discovered evidence that points to the Source Engine 2 having been in parallel development with the filmmaker.

Within the Source Filmmaker script files can be found references to “Source,” “Hybrid,” and “Source 2.” The ValveTime forums speculate that Hybrid is the base for which Source 2 is sitting on, and report that it appears Source 2 is using the same pipeline as Source, meaning that it will probably be keeping its .BSP level format.

Meanwhile, reports from the Facepunch forums point to some new “Source 2 tools” icons stashed away in the SFM files, lending even more evidence to the case.

Could this be a sign that Valve will soon be reaffirming its position as a game developer, rather than just a digital distribution service provider?

They have always made games. Dota 2 full releases soon and so does Counterstrike GO. Just because they are the best digital publisher doesn’t mean they lose their crown as the best game developer either.

Good developers take existing ideas and use them effectively; (Treyarch, Obsidian, Bungie). Great developers expand our understanding of existing ideas; (Bioware, Bethesda, Rocksteady). Legendary developers change our expectaions of what games can be; (Nintendo, ID, Valve, Rockstar).
Half Life redefined what we should expect from a games narrative (or atleast it should have); Counter Strike redefined the nature of competitive multiplayer (until Bungie made the death match popular again, anyway); Half Life 2 redefined what we expect from interaction within a game environment. Everything that Valve has released since, although admittedly of a very high standard, has not had the awe and inspiration that those titles had.
The industry needs Valve to kick it’s ass again because it doesn’t look like there are any other developers ready to step up (possible exceptions being GTA5 and Dishonored). Hopefully Source 2 is going to be a revolution rather than an iteration, because in my opinion we need a new benchmark; WE NEED HALF LIFE 3!
