South Park: The Stick of Truth On Track For 2013 Release

South Park Studios may not be entirely happy with how the now defunct THQ handled their license by selling it off to Ubisoft, but the French publisher appears poised to go ahead with the game’s release this year now that they’ve acquired its publication rights.

Ubisoft has announced that South Park: The Stick of Truth is on track for a 2013 release. They have been unable to provide an exact release date, however. Under THQ, the game was originally slated for release in March 2013. It’s unknown whether Ubisoft will delay the game’s release for further polish or to smooth over the acquisition. The RPG is currently in development at Fallout: New Vegas studio Obsidian Entertainment.

Gameranx’s Matt Hawkins reports that before shutting down, THQ owed South Park Studios at least $2.275 million in defaulted payments.

In addition to the South Park RPG, Ubisoft’s acquisitions include Patrice D├ęsilets’ studio, THQ Montreal, whose properties include two as-yet-unrevealed games in development at the studio: 1666, and an unnamed title, codenamed Underdog.

I love South Park, but I can’t see this being too good apart from injecting some of the humour from the show. Can’t be any worse than Family Guy, but I doubt it’ll be on par with the Futurama PS2 game or The Simpsons. I just can’t get into the idea of it being an RPG, it seems like the gameplay should be kept relatively self-explanatory since the show itself is what’s going to sell it. I’ll reserve judgement till it comes out, though.
