Square Enix Defeats Final Fantasy XI Class Action Lawsuit

The class action lawsuit filed against Square Enix over the Final Fantasy XI MMORPG has ended with total victory for Square Enix. The suit, filed in 2009 by San Francisco resident Esther Leong alleged “deceptive advertising, unfair business practices, and fraudulent concealment with respect to the online games at the point of purchase.” She sought 5 million in damages but alas, she will likely be forced to pay ruinous legal fees instead. The presiding judge dismissed the case with prejudice – meaning that Leong cannot bring another suit on the same charges – on December 20th.

Though dwarfed in the US by giants like World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XI, AKA Final Fantasy XI Online is a huge hit in Japan. It became the dominant MMORPG in Japan in 2006 and still retains a large player base in the hundreds of thousands and was for a time the 6th most played XBLA game.
