Square Enix Trademarks What Could Be a New Deus Ex Game

Sometimes we find out about new games from press releases. Sometimes they’re announced at conventions. Other times, though, we find out about new games because some eagle-eyed watcher spots a trademark registration, a Steam listing, or some other under-the-radar thing. That’s where this morning’s news comes from.

Over on NeoGAF, member miladesn has posted a screencap of what appears to be a pending trademark registration by Square Enix. The registration lists “DEUS EX: HUMAN DEFIANCE” as the registered name. Here’s the image:

Now, we obviously can’t tell what this represents from the trademark listing, and Square Enix isn’t talking. All they would say was that, “Square Enix does not comment on rumor and speculation.” Based on what we know, here are a few possibilities:

  • Sequel to Deus Ex: Human Revolution – This is my pick, as it’s about time for Square to show off their next big project now that Tomb Raider is about to launch.
  • Wii U port / Wii U exclusive – Don’t see a port as necessitating a name change, and the odds of a new Deus Ex game being Wii U exclusive are slim to none.
  • Deus Ex movie – Because why the hell not?

I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about this soon, as we’re about to enter convention season. If Square isn’t talking about it at PAX East, you can expect to hear something from E3. In the meantime, tell us what you think it represents!

Hope they bring back Jensen and the voice actor, wouldn’t be the same without him.

“I never asked for this.” Joking aside, I wouldn’t mind seeing another Deus Ex. I had a lot of fun with the last game, so another would be fine by me. As Ron pointed out, the timing for some sort of announcement would be right. With Tomb Raider almost out, Square Enix undoubtedly will be looking to push the next Western-made title it has coming, and it has certainly been long enough since Human Revolution came out.

Would love another one. Loved the every Deus Ex minus the Invis. War. Enjoyed Human Revolution and the dlc. Such a great setting, the Deus Ex universe. Dark, dreary and lots of fun. Definitely a movie as well.

I hope this isnt related to the Deus Ex film, and is the next game in the series, I had a ton of fun with DX:HR, one of my all time fave games, and thoroughly enjoyed the missing link DLC, loved the achievements for that one.

I’d like to see Jensen back as well, but I have a horrible feeling the ‘canon’ ending of the three wouldnt be one that allows that.
