Square’s Freshly Minted Montreal Studio to Start With a New Hitman Title
Square Enix has just issued a press release announcing it will further expand its operations in Montreal with a new studio. That new studio’s first project: A new Hitman title.
There aren’t a lot to go on, but we do know that this is a new game and not some expansion or additional work on Hitman: Absolution, the next Hitman title being developed by IO Interactive. Square Enix Montreal, as the new studio is known, will be working on something separate, it seems. Here’s a quote from the release:
The first project at Square Enix Montréal will be to work on a new premium quality game in the award-winning HITMAN® franchise. This further investment will expand the vision for the HITMAN franchise and mean that two studios will now be working on future HITMAN games: IO Interactive, a Square Enix studio based in Copenhagen, creator of the HITMAN franchise is currently developing HITMAN ABSOLUTION™ and now Square Enix Montréal also.
According to a report from Eurogamer citing a “trusted source,” the new Hitman title will be for next-generation platforms.
It also states that while IO Interactive is working on Hitman: Absolution on its own, the developer and creator of the Hitman series will be contributing to Square Enix Montreal’s game by sending three developers to the new studio.
Square Enix Montreal is going to generate 150 new jobs for the city when it opens its doors in 2012. It’ll be headed by Lee Singleton, the current general manager from Square Enix London and whose credits include Batman: Arkham Asylum and Just Cause 2.
