Star Citizen Crosses $22 Million, Adds Facial Capture Tech

Star Citizen ships and systems look gorgeous. Thanks to hitting its $22 million stretch goal, the crowdfunded space sim from Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts will feature equally eye-pleasing characters.

Just four days after clearing the $21 million mark and unlocking Salvage Mechanic as a career, Star Citizen shot past $22 million, adding a new facial capture system that will allow the devs to put real faces from real people into the game — potentially even your own.

The tech comes from the folks at Infinite Realities, and according to the company’s website, its high-res, 360° face capture system is capable of producing 7.5 million polygon models. That’s a lot of polygons. Cloud Imperium Games notes that the technology is mobile enough to take on the road, and it plans to do just that to “capture select fans during special events.”

How good will these new Star Citizen faces look? Most recently, Infinite Realities tech was used to produce this pretty CGI trailer for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt:
