Star Citizen Garners Over $8.1m in Crowd Funding

Chris Roberts is best known for his work on the Wing Commander series of games, which had their time under the sun back in the mid-90s. He’s always been a champion of the space sim genre, which has been on the wane in the past decade, seeing few releases and even fewer games on par with the flight sims of yesteryear.

Roberts has returned to the game industry after a long hiatus with a new game called Star Citizen. It’s a crowd-funded attempt to resurrect the genre, and Roberts’ biggest game to date.

Roberts reports that the total accumulated funds for the game exceed $8.1 million, with $2.1 million contributed through Kickstarter, and $6 million through the Roberts Space Industries website, quadrupling the $500,000 goal Roberts originally set out to attain. Over 142,000 gamers pledged to support the game.

It goes without saying that the game’s crowd-fund has been a huge success, and ensures that Star Citizen has a decent pair of legs to stand on when Roberts pushes ahead with its development.
