Star Wars Galaxies Servers Shut Off December 31, 2011

The venerable MMORPG Star Wars Galaxies, launched in 2003, will be using the Force for its final time come the end of the year. With The Old Republic moving in as the new Sheriff, Star Wars MMO town just isn’t big enough for the both of ‘em.

SOE Community Relations director Linda Carlson said:

It was time to turn it off. We have a contractual relationship that’s ending in 2012, The Old Republic launching, a bunch of other business things with LucasArts, and then you look at the odds of a pretty large portion of the audience moving to TOR, which looks like a terrific game. I think that’s going to be really well-received by the population.

There is some good news for SWG fans:

I think [Star Wars Galaxies] is going to go out in a memorable way. With a bang, not a whimper; that’s for sure.

There’s a cliffhanger you’ll have to sit on until December.

I cant wait for the old republic to come out. Hopefully we get a release date at comic con and don’t have to wait until next year…again.
