Starbound Named Top Indie of 2013 by IndieDB Readers

Game of the Year lists vary widely from journo to journo in 2013 — more so than any year in recent memory — and many believe there is no clear-cut GOTY winner. It gets a bit easier when you focus in on indie games… at least I thought it did before I saw the IndieDB Players’ Choice results.

More than 97,000 votes were cast, and the surprising winner was Starbound, the procedurally generated RPG that launched just this month and in alpha form no less. That’s not the only curious decision by IndieDB voters. Check out the full top 10 list:

10. Rogue Legacy
9. Outlast
8. Tales of Maj’Eyal
7. Path of Exile
6. Into the Dark
5. The Stanley Parable
4. Space Engineers
3. Kerbal Space Program
2. Contagion
1. Starbound

Of note: one game that launched in 2012 (though, admittedly, Tales of Maj’Eyal was released on the last day of 2012, but still…), three are still in early access — aka alpha and beta form — and four of my personal top five indies of 2013 got the shaft: Gone Home, Monaco, Gunpoint, and The Swapper. And Rogue Legacy at No. 10 is just plain wrong.

Anywho, that’s what GOTY lists are all about. What does your top Indies of 2013 list look like?
