Starbreeze Seeking Acquisition of Payday: The Heist Studio
Starbreeze is looking to acquire Overkill Software, developer of Payday: The Heist. Pending approval by Starbreeze’s shareholders, the acquisition is set to go into effect in mid-June.
No, Starbreeze isn’t the name of a Decepticon — it’s the studio famous for the Chronicles of Riddick game and the recent reboot of Syndicate. Overkill, whose IPs include Payday, P13, and Cold Mercury, was formed when Grin Software collapsed in 2009 following several commercially unsuccessful projects.
Overkill creative director Ulf Andersson said:
“Starbreeze has graphical emphasis, and Overkill has total focus on innovative gameplay. Together we form a unique constellation of creative forces.”
Acquisitions always seem like a mixed bag to me; should you be happy that a company is successful enough to be bought over, or saddened that their creative freedom may be staunched?
